Scope help????

I just purchased my first rifle for this hunting season. I always hunt with my bow and my muzzleloader, but I broke down and bought a 1980 Remington 700 blued stainless 7mm mag. It wasnt my caliber of choice, but I fell in love with the gun. It has a 2x7 wideview Redfield 2 x 7 scope mounted on it and I was wanting to upgrade to a newer scope. My questions are wat scope under $1000 is the way to go and a guy at work wants to buy the redfield so what would an old scope like this be worth? I have been looking at the Vx-3 but before I made the plunge what would you guys suggest? Also what magnification, tube size etc. I will be hunting open fields where a shot up to 200 yards would not be out of the question.

Minox, Zeiss, or a Leupold VX3. Since you're spending a few bucks anyways I'd go with a 50mm objective.

I agree. A quality scope with a 40mm objective is plenty!

I'll agree, but the 50mm's do seem a little brighter than the 40's (this is comparing my 40mm and 50mm Buckmaster's).

And heck, he gave us a $1000 budget! Might as well use it lol.

Can't believe no one has suggested Vortex! They make great scopes and offer a no BS lifetime warranty against their product. You can get a great Vortex scope at half the price of a Zeiss. Their customer support is above the rest, and hassle free.

Not knocking Zeiss; If I could afford one, you can bet your bottom I'd have one.

optics planet has the 3-9 Conquest for 399,the Vortex Viper is 299,,

if you are just gonna zero and hunt with it I like the Ziess better,but for tactical stuff I like the Leupold turrets better.

I was talking about from a clarity standpoint. It doesn't have to be mounted for me to look through it as daylight fades away.

I would go with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 or a Minox ZA5 3-15x42. IMO, the Minox has better resolution with darker colors in low light. The downside of the Minox is the eye box is tight at high power. Both are excellent scopes for the money.

Thanks guys for your help. I havent looked through the conquest but I will before I make a purchase. I appreciate all the input and assistance. I just want to make one purchase and be done with it. Nothing against cheaper scopes but my uncle and his friends have mega high dollar scopes and they can hunt that last 15 without worry and I just want to make sure that I make a good purchase and one that will last a lifetime. One last thing that I was thinking about was the scope power. Everyone suggest 3 x 9 but would it be realistic to put a 6 x 20 power scope on and still be able to shoot at ranges as short as 50 yards.

Zeiss, Minox, Meopta, or Sightron SII Big Sky. No need to go bigger than 44mm with quality glass.

A 2.5-8 or 3.5-10 Leupold works very well also but the Conquest is at least as good way cheaper.the constant eye relief at any power level and the clarity edge to edge is hard to beat .I cant think of a thousand dollar scope I would rather have just to hunt with..but for target or tactical shooting you can spend 2-3 times that

The little Redfield 2X7 are pretty good little scopes. Light and make a handy carry rig.....just saying...

there are more disadvantages than advantages with a 50mm scope. the difference in brightness is negligable. i can shoot well past legal time with a 40mm scope.

Since you said it was a 7mag, I would go with a good 4x12x40. which is what my 7mag has now. I've had 3x9's and up to 6.5x20x50 mm scopes but I think the 4x12 is the optimum size for the caliber of rifle you have. A 4x12 is not much heavier or larger that the 3x9 but offers much more magnification than the 3x9 and is not near and bulky as a larger powerd scope, assuming that you intent to hunt with it and not target shoot. Just get a good one. Leupold,Ziess,Nikon,Elite's3200 or 4200,Burris,Sightrons SII's are all good picks. Check as my out as you can because we all have opinions and you know what "YOU" like.

absolutely. those 50s/AO are heavy, bulky and destroy balance is a trim lightweight firearm. and through a standard one inch tube, have no perfermance advantages. i would go with a trim, light 2.5-8x36mm vx3 or a 3.5-10x40mm vx3

I was the same way. Loved my Leupolds, until I tried a Zeiss Conquest. I won't pay a premium for a product that is not better than a Zeiss Conquest.
