I know it's separate from regular quota hunts. Do they use preference points? What areas have good numbers? Apply as a party? Started applying the other night but thought I'd ask you guys what you thought. [emoji16]

LBL does use preference points.

There is good hunting in all of the areas. There isn't one particular area that I would rate as the best.

LBL does allow hunters to apply as a party. There are no advantages to applying as a party beyond the knowledge that if one is drawn, all will be drawn.

Scn is spot on. Only thing I would add is that make sure you apply in TN and if you do apply as a party one other benefit is you know some of the other people in the area with you.

Its been said over and over again but the best area in LBL is the one you know.

Its open year round, a hunter/hiker/camping permit MAY be required to scout. Call the office to find out for sure.

They have open Archery hunts, they do close them around the quota hunt days though. Check out the LBL website for specifics.

Quota Hunt days are; Nov 13-14 and Nov 28-29 and the youth hunt is Oct 17-18
Archery– Sep 26-Jan 3; Except for quota hunt days and one day immediately before each quota hunt.

Be aware that LBL is no secret and sometimes the archery hunting can actually be a little crowded. LBL is huge so plenty of room, sadly some people dont want to give you room.

I usually don't hunt LBL much until after the final gun hunt. But throughout December, in my opinion, is the besttime to hunt . I have seen several good bucks there in December, and killed a few also. Most people have given up hunting by that time anyways, so you can pretty much hunt wherever you want and not be bothered.

Many of the safety zones are open to archery hunting after Dec 01.....Big plus!

I agree, LBL is loaded with does. I cant think of one time I've hunted there and not seen at least one doe.

LBL is 170,000 acres of land. It's about 90% forest and ridges.

How is the Deer Population in LBL ? LBL actually has a fairly low deer density compared with surrounded private land. This is simply because mature forest and large forested areas generally do not support high deer numbers. There are some big bucks in LBL but they are often scattered out onto a large amount of forested land, so patterning them can often take a lot of time and patience.

What areas are best ? The truth is every single hunting area/ unit is mostly forest and ridges. So most all the hunting areas provide generally the same type of habitat and hunting conditions.

Which is better the Kentucky side or the Tennessee side of LBL ? Both sides have good and bad areas. The Kentucky side generally gets more pressure, especially from Non Resident hunters do to the reputation Kentucky has for deer hunting. The Tennessee side receives less pressure and has more undeveloped land in between the roads. The Bucks on the TN side of LBL are just as big as the bucks on the KY side of LBL.
