Scent / lure ?

Ok I have another stupid question.

What is the difference in a bait and a lure?

Both smell equally bad to me?

I have been putting lure in the dirt hole as well as lure?
Didn't realize the difference?

Bait is typically food based to entice hunger response. Put it where they would expect food to be, like in a hole or hollowed log.

Lure is more scent only and typically meant to entice territorial, curiosity, or sexual based responses. Some lure does also have hunger or food response added, though... to be an all in one. Place lure on backing or top lip of dirt hole. Also place on the scent posts, etc.

Some folks use lures only or rarely use bait. Regardless, studies have shown that having 3 to 4 different scents at a set is more successful than just one. Most of the commercial baits and lures all have at leat 2 or 3 scents in them.

I personally like bait in holes with lure somewhere up out of the hole. I wouldn't want to make dirt hole without some meat based bait in it, unless I just didn't have any.

An awesome change up is fresh deer meat....no other bait, lure or urine.

I use this in early January. After a few months of every smell under creation thrown at them, and with a couple months of cold weather to deplete the fat, a bloody handful of ripe but not tainted deer scraps will work like a charm on k9's. I cut up my own deer and just use the scraps that would go in the trash anyway.

Also, anytime you come across a mouse nest or rabbit nest, save the lining and nothing else is needed, makes a great dirt hole.

I save table scraps like steak bones/fat/grizzle, salmon skin, etc and freeze. Use that to start off the season, especially in town where I prebait for a week...put traps out Friday afternoon and then pull after 1 or 2 nights.
