Scent Killer: Does This Stuff Really Work?

The new aerosol scent killer sprays are expensive and only last a few hunts.

I just bought a gallon of Scent Killer.

Anyone use Scent Killer and does anybody believe it actually helps?

I use scentaway and I am sure it helps. I dont get busted like I used to before I started useing scent reducing products.

"Dead Down Wind" seems to have made a real difference since I have been using it. I know Grant Woods promotes it and I probably fell for his marketing the product, but it seems to work better than some of the Hunter Specialty products I used to use.

I use the Hunter Specialties Scent-away and believe it helps, as much as it could help, in reducing a percentage of my odor. These new expensive sprays�no way would I spend the money for any of them.

100% yes as long as you use it as a supplement to a sound scent control plan. If your plan is only to spray down a little before you hunt it will do nothing to keep a deer from smelling you

Like several have said,it absolutely works,but won't cover you %100. I know some people who won't take care of their clothes before hand, and just spray down when they get out of the truck. Those are generally the people who get busted. :D

Scent Away does seem to remove most smells, when it has completely dried. Last year I remember it even cut out most of the smoke smell from my hat, after I soaked it down pretty well with the spray. The toughest thing to remove scent from is my shoes. When they get an odor after lots of use, it's very hard to remove. I spray them down thoroughly though just to reduce the smell.

Before opening morning this year, I cleaned out the cab of my truck and sprayed down the whole interior, concentrating on the seats and especially the drivers side. Sure couldn't smell anything when I got in the truck then. but of course a quick stop at Sonic will bring back a fast food smell quickly. I am impressed with how much Scent Away will cover up, but I know the deer have much better noses and will smell me in the right situation anyway.

I also got the Scent Away body wash/shampoo and antiperspirant. If anything it makes me feel better going into the woods.... lol

Haven't tried the other brands, mainly cause I figure they are all pretty similar and Scent Away is pretty cheap.

The only thing I do is to hang my clothes outside and let them air out. Before my hunt I then put them in a plastic container. Always seems to work for me.

I know a guy who is friends with the guy who makes it. I dont know if it works like they say but they do kill alot of good deer on there managed lease.

Is it a colored liquid?? If so, will it stain clothing or skin when applied??

It is colored, like a brown! I only spray it on my hunting clothes that are camo so I dont really know if is stains clothes. Skin, no.

Having experimented with various brands and compared ingredients, some do work better than others and have completely different ingredients. Now, so of this difference can vary from person to person as people have different PH levels on their skin and, probably more importantly, some people have really acidic sweat. Of course, diet and pheromones play a significant role as well.

For me, the Primos line is absolute garbage, for example. The deodorant does not work at all. I can put that stuff on and have noticeably stinking arm pits just loading my truck. I also found that their body wash does not lather up very well, making it difficult to get a good scrubbing. Brands that I have used that seem to work well for me:

Scent Killer
Scent Away
Dead Down Wind
Vanishing Hunter

I use the Dead Downwind soap and deodorant (the deodorant works noticeably better and last noticeably longer than the Arm & Hammer unscented I use during the off season -only thing is, it is has a very "creamy" texture that will get on your clothes). I use the Scent Killer spray on my backpack (where it gets sweaty) and bow release and the Vanishing Hunter spray directly on my skin as a extra step when it is hot out.

My clothes and gear are always stored in airtight bags and I always wear clean base layers. As a result, I don't ever use spray to spray down my clothes. I've had the same bottle of Scent Killer for 3 years.

So, my comparative conclusion is that many of these work in a similar method for many people, but some of them will not work well, even at all, for some people, so I wouldn't necessarily conclude that they all work the same, but many people will get similar results from the different products.

I totally agree on the Primos product. I bought the shampoo/body soap and it is terrible. It doesn't lather well and i always stink after hunting when I use the product.

I been keeping my clothes clean(in bag) and shower before every hunt. Keeping boots off til I get out and stomping all in crab apples before I start in.. No scentlok like I wear every time and no cover scent... I haven't had no change in deer smelling me no different than using spray and scentlok.. And I've had mature does with fawns all over me last 2 weekends and come in from every direction..

You can't beat their nose period.!

But you can knock your odor down some. Cover scent may help, scentlok may help, but "clean" helps just as much as both from what I've seen.. I used to be a cover scent addict and always wear scentlok until this year. I'm gonna stay clean and just HUNT!!..And see if it's really worth all the trouble...

Dead down wind is all I use

I have had good luck with Dead down wind. After I put my boots on when I get to where I'm going on my ATV. I spray the bottoms down really good, I rarely have a deer smell where I walk in by doing this. I also spray my seat on my stand and my backpack each hunt. I think it has helped my sightings alot.

I will say that I dont "think" I have been winded nearly as much since implementing a serious scent control regime that includes Dead Down Wind spray, detergent, and soap and air drying. My clothes stay outside from about a week or two prior to season, all the way to the end on a covered porch as well. There is no sustained wind direction where I hunt either, it is constantly shifting and changing. But we never really know if a buck is just out of sight and winds us and just leaves quietly.
