Scent Killer Choices

Just curious if anyone changes from one brand of scent killer to another each season. I read where deer can remember certain scents and by changing scent killer each year , you reduce the chances if the deer in your area of busting you.

i have always used plain old baking soda when washing clothes.if i ever use any other cover scent, its a earth scent.really never been big on wasting money on all the products out there,playing the wind is the best scent cover.just my :2c:

If your going to use them I like the idea of changing up but I do what greygoose does. Even the earth scent part. The scent is more for me than being undetected. Puts me in the mood

I don't use much of any cover scent aside from Nose Jammer or Evercalm on my boots. I use ozone in the tote that I keep my clothes in and I change into my gear when I get to my spot. My clothes don't see the inside of my truck and my boots are the same way. I've only hunted 3 season so I may be really screwing up without even realizing it.

Are you implying that scent killer has a scent? Maybe they need to come up with a cover scent for scent killer? I spray my boots down and they only get worn in the woods. Then I use smoke as a cover once it gets cold enough that you smell chimney smoke. Scent killer is nothing but a mix of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and a few other magic ingredients. It does work but nothing is 100%. Even they say 99%.

I remember watching a Mythbusters episode on scent control using a dog (bloodhound iirc) that found them out every time easily if the trail was less than several hours old. Deer noses are supposedly better than dogs. I quit thinking much about scent control after that but MUCH more on how wind, temps, thermals etc effect my sent. I bet human breath is pretty easy to figure out as danger but not many (any?) scent killers are considered good mouth wash. If I can smell human breath I think a deer would have no problem. I think of my chosen stand as being a stink bomb and hunt accordingly.

I don't worry about myth busters. I know when I wear scent loc, stick to a scent reduction routine and watch my entry and exit routes, I see more deer and don't get busted. I know there isn't a 100% scent free but I strive to get close. I know the last few year I hunted recklessly(playing the wind) with out much scent control that my deer sightings has reduced dramatically.

There is no thing as scent free or controlled scent it's not possible, hunt the winds and learn to use thermals to your advantage.

Nah I just use scent killer or ozone on the days that I do use scent control. And if I need an extra edge I carry a stick of evercalm.

I think most scent products reduce a certain percentage of your scent, not all of it. A deer can't smell you when you're downwind of him and he can smell you when he is down wind of you. I think the scent products help you most in the gray areas in between. I also think they help you leave less residual scent behind. My two scents

I keep a spray bottle in the truck and hit my boots and clothes with it before going into the woods. I can't swear that it works but I don't think it can hurt either. I also carry a small spray bottle in my pack and when I hang a stand or leave my climber on a tree for a next day's hunt I'll spray it down before leaving.

I'm not sure this is very good advice.

I do the same, spray it on my boots before I walk in. Who knows if it help, but I'm pretty convinced it doesn't hurt.

RE: other scent killers, I just use unscented soap and deodorant, not specifically for hunting, I can't justify buying all the items you can get.

I think playing the wind is the best but I use scent control some. I tried some fresh cut cedder twigs in my scent cloths bag last year & during some wind changes never got busted.

Heck yeah play the wind. I know where I hunt that wind never changes directions. It blows the same in the same location morning noon and night day after day. It's not even worth trying to fool a deers nose
