What sort of steps do you guys take to suppress your scent when in the woods? I never worried about it hunting in stands back home before moving here but on the ground it seems way more important.

I stow all my gear (clothes, ground blind, chair) in a rubbermaid tub with cedar branches, leaves and dirt from the area I have been hunting until the morning of the hunt and spray down my boots with scent killer before going into the woods. I also pin "dirt wafers" to my day pack when I am hunting. I also initially sprayed down all my clothes before putting them in the tub before the season started.

Is there anything else I should be doing? At this point in the rut will estrous be a benefit? I also have a "buck bomb" I wanted to try when I find the right situation in estrous, anyone ever use one of those?

I am going to spend the rest of my season in a new spot and want to make sure I am doing everything I can to cover my scent.
 
Canned deer scents to attract I'm not a fan of... I use fresh earth wafers in a hs scent bag with cedar branches and a few pine ones from aroun my house... I don't usually spray down other than my boots and back pack and I hunt the wind with in my favor...
 
I wash my clothes in scent killer detergent and after they dry I spray them with fresh earth scent and put them in a tub. I spray generously in fresh earth scent again and use fresh earth wafers when I get to the property. Estrous won't help at this point. If you wanted to use something along those lines I would use buck and/or doe urine (Tinks or Code Blue). I just stick to the fresh earth scent and occasionally put vanilla on my boots and bottom of my pants around my boots before walking to the stand.
 
Sounds like your doing enough in my IMO. I would leave those bombs and all that at the house though. Also make sure to use a scent free detergent and body wash.
 
I use to buy all that stuff, but i no longer do. Does some of it work, maybe, but for the last two years ive done a little experimenting. Most of the gadgets and gimmicks sold are just that, "gadgets & gimmicks," They are nothing but to take your money. I use to pay $8-$10 dollars for laundry detergent, $3-$4 dollars for a bar of scent free soap, crazy, especially when you can buy normal detergents for $4.50 a bottle that are free of scent and everything, i buy 3 bars of scent free soap at the dollar general for $2.50. They are nothing special, just marketed to look like they are. Just watch your wind and the way you enter and exit your stand makes a huge difference. When it comes to deer lures, you dont need them. I have pissed in scrapes and had bucks come thru and tear them all to pieces, alot cheaper than deer urine, lol, good huntn guys!!!

I use scent free detergent and put them in a bag with a couple of fresh earth waffers.
I also spray down with fresh earth when I get to the woods and I'll also hang fresh earth waffers around my stand.
 
Thanks everyone it seems I have a handle on it. The fresh earth wafers are great (unless you ask my wife when she is in the room when I open my tub lol)
 
I watch the wind. When not in use the hunting clothes are stored in sealed tub with vanilla scent. During hunting season the scent free laundry detergent is used. I use scent cover on hat and back pack. During the rut I drag scent pad where I walk.
I watch and hunt based on the wind.
 
I met a fekkow who collevted road kill skunks and threw them out upwind of his stand. He claimed it worked great to keep himfrom being busted...

I'm not "that" determined...
 
I do pay a "little" attention to the wind but other than that NOTHING. For instance, I have killed 5 coyotes, 1 bobcat and 3 deer all from the same stand in the last 2 weeks and hunted the same stand 10-12 times. Yesterday evening I killed my biggest 8pt which some are saying he is 4.5+....don't get me wrong I have been winded but always by the does and never from a buck that I saw.

IMO opinion the conditions change to often during a hunt to stress over the small stuff. Does it help, yes I am sure it does and if it makes you feel more confident then go for it.

I dislike fresh earth scent. I stopped using cover scents and am now trying to minimize my presence in the woods. I put all my clothes and gear in a big plastic tub and treat it with my Whitetail'r ScentPurge 50 ozone generator ($38 at Wing Supply) to remove odors and kill scent causing bacteria. My clothes, pack, boots, and gear all get a short ozone bath in the plastic tub. Once the ozone treatment is done, everything comes out of the tub and gets stored in Scent Shield Dry Bags until I get to my hunting grounds. The Scent Shield Dry Bags (available from Sportsman's Guide) are an awesome product for storing hunting clothes and packs and keeping them scent free.
 
Well, I wash my hunting clothes in scent free detergent, take showers with scent free soap and shampoo, and keep my clothes in separate containers to help keep other odors from getting in them. I also keep my hunting boots put up and only put them on as I'm entering the woods in which I hunt, and back off again at the truck. That's about it. I don't use cover sprays or scent eliminating sprays\, and hunt the wind. Works for me.
 
I use a bee smoker filled with pine needles on everything except my boots and spray them down with scent eliminator and try to watch the wind. I've been smelled by many deer and unless I move they disregard me after the smoke jitters and go on their way. Sometimes they trot off but I never get the reaction I did when I got busted and they snorted and ran off. After using this for about 6 seasons, I am a believer in the smoke.
 
I ain't being ugly,but I just don't buy any of the scent cover business. I mean think about it,that deer has been using his nose to stay alive 24 hours a day since shortly after he was born. He can smell where you walked,just your footprints hours or even a day later. I've had deer blow at me from a distance I know was 600 yards and they were sure about me.I,m sure they can smell me from much,much farther away but don't advertise it by blowing. We would probably be shocked out of our shorts if we knew the number of deer that smelled us in the woods and avoided us that we never knew about.

My brother went all out on the scent deal with the washing and bags and all that and if the deer got down wind he got busted unless he was waayy up high and his scent went over them. It didn't have anything to do with scent control.

If you think about cedar branches in tubs with your clothes etc. those deer smell cedars every day all day,they can smell where you handled the cedar branches,they can smell the plastic of the tub or bag.The washing clothes deal? They can smell the clothes or your drawers you wore in the truck to the woods if you change when you get there,they can smell your truck seat on the seat of your pants where you spilled coffee or sausage and busicuts 2 weeks ago. They can smell your stand where it's been in your house or garage or barn. They smell your gun,your shells where you handled the shells loading it that morning.

They smell your feet with the scent coming up out of your boots and they smell your breath and what you ate for breakfast and just on and on.

I think the best scent control tool is between your ears. A deer can't smell what never goes in his nose and I think that's the key.

I have a couple little feist squirrel dogs that shock me all the time by winding a little 1/2 lb squirrel 40 feet up a tree and going to almost the tree they are in and locking down and start hammering. Your body size is 150 times that of a squirrel and that deer's nose is probably better than the feist dog.

I would guess most of us are 300-500 times the size of a 1/2 pound squirrel [emoji6]
 
I've wondered about scent control for years so I've just tried to play the wind best I can. I have used most the sprays and been busted wearing all of them. This year I used the scent killer 99% and have had 4 encounters where I would have been busted or should have been busted. 3 Of them were times when I had deer walk the trail I came in on and never alerted or acted like anything was wrong. I had been workin a lot and didn't get to wash my camo that I hunted in for a month or so. That can go either way but what sold me was when I still hadn't washed my camo and just sprayed before I walked in and few hours later I looked back and had a doe bedded down behind me up the ridge 20 yards on as dead level plane with a 5mph wind right in her face. That right there is what really opened my eyes

Best cover scent in the woods. I put some in with my clothes and cover my boots and pants before I walk to my stand. I've hunted 15-20 days this year and not been busted once.
