I have a 100 sawtooth oaks due to arrive in Feburary. They are seedlings that I bought from the forestry dept. How many years until these trees start dopping acorns? I also would like to buy a couple of larger sawtooths for my yard. Does anyone know of a good place to buy these larger oaks? What would I be looking to spend? Thanks.
 
I have a question that relates to this that I would like to add. When is the best time to plant sawtooths? On the acorns, I think I have seen somewhere that they can produce in 3 to 7 years.
 
Ive probably got 75 to 100 that i planted 5 years ago> None have bore any acorns yet. You have to plant them where you can look after them keep the competition from other plants down and fertilize them. Now is the time to plant them. I got mine from the NWTF few years ago..
 
I saw some on the TDF Nursery in Delano that the professor I was with said were 4 years old and were already producing. And if anyone has ever visited the UT ag campus they know in the fall the place is covered, those are older trees, but it can be hard to walk in places for all of the acorns.

I Have 10 in my yard that are 17 years old and they have been bearing steadily since they were 5 years old. They didn't have a lot of acorns this year, but most years they are covered. Noted, they are in the yard so they have NO competition and are fertilized regularly. The trees at UT are over thirty years old. They were mature trees when I was in school there 1982-1987.
 
I bought somme larger sawtooths from Spandle Nurseries. Mine were supposed to be 12 to 15 feet tall but they were not quite that. Just set them out. Service was good but shipping was $88 from Georgia to Tn. Spandle Nurseries 1-800-553-5771, www.spandles.com
 
Make sure you put them in the open. Sawtooths are not shade tolerent. They should bear within 5-7 years.
 
Mine were five years old this past spring and I was expecting a few acorns as many were over ten feet tall. However, the late freeze really knocked them back. Not only did I get no acorns, but the freeze took anywhere from a couple of years of growth off them to taking them back to the ground for some.
 
do any places (Lowes/Home Depot/ etc.) close to Nashville have sawtooth oaks? I know you can get some from the NWTF website but the minimum you can buy is 25 and I don't have space for that many and I would like to get some that are already 3-5 feet tall!

i have a sawtooth that i got from the forestry dept about 7yrs ago and it produced year before last and even a sappling sprouted last spring. so now i have two trees.
 
what is the difference between sawtooths and gobbler sawtooths? I heard the gobbler's drop faster but are smaller in size? Are their any other good, fast dropping oaks to plant?
 
I have some here at the house that I believe started dropping on year 5 ,But these trees were about 20 to 25 ft tall then also.
I picked up about a hundred acorns last fall and I'm going to try an experiment on them .some I have stored in the fridge this winter and some in the freezer .I will plant half of both groups in pead pots and the other half in the ground to move next spring.
