I planted 4 sawtooth oaks behind the house in late fall and they haven't started to sprout leaves yet. I broke a few little twigs and they just snapped with a crack and didn't look green. They are in the 10 - 14' range. Are they in trouble or is this typical with them in the first year? I planted a poplar at the same time and it's doing well.
 
Mine are just now starting to sprout...about a week ago they is when they actually began to sprout.

If you trees are that large, I would say you may picked out a few of the dead ends? With the rain and heat we have had, they may be fine? Usually around the 2nd week of May when they should be leafed (if leafed is a word...lol)
 
Whatever you do leave them in the ground until they rot out. I have had several over the years that would die way back and then put on new growth from the ground the following year. I pulled up several one year only to find nice green roots.
 
All but one of mine have sprouted. Do you see any buds that have formed? that will tell you where the tree is viable and should produce leaves.

Well I hope ya'll are right and they come on because it took me over an hour to dig each hole not to mention the expense.

I took my pocket knife and scraped the bark on one of them this afternoon and it didn't look "green" to me. I'll leave them in the ground and pray for the best.
 
maybe if they died on top they will start over again and come out from the lower trunk area....wait and see.

Dang that sucks... Good looking tree... How long have they been in the ground?

(should have read it again i see you planted in fall)
