I seen lots of bucks in the last 4 years but havent killed one because I've only encountered 2 shooters and I never got a shot at either. BTW, my definition of shooter buck is 8ish or better and outside the ears. I have watched a ton of 4 pt and under on my farm but it is paying off this year. Today I watched a big time 8 pt at 125 yards do his thing and just walk the other way. Cant wait for ML/gun season!!
 
What was his behavior like? Was he scraping, checking field edges, bullying other bucks? Could you tell he was moving.into the prerut stage?

i agree. i would back out and not risk educating or wounding him. Bring in a rifle in a few weeks and finish the job
