Savage Smokeless?

I bought a new savage 10ML2 with accutrigger a few months ago. I haven't shot it yet, but bought IMR 4227 smokeless powder to try in it.Does anyone shoot this in their savage? How do you like it?

congrats on the purchase! currently shootin imr 4759 and had good results with aa 5744. will be intrested to here results with 4227. steve

You will be better served by SR-4759 @ 42-43 gr and a 250 sst than 4227.

I shot 4227 and had ok results (1-2 moa). 4759 is much more consistant for me.

5744 did well also, what little of it I shot. I never timed 5744, but IIRC, 43 gr sr-4759/250 sst produced a little over 2,300 fps for me. I think 5744 would be about 21-2200 before book max.

4227 use to be a 'book' powder for Savage ML but too many folks had misfires from the stuff that it was removed from the manual as a preferred powder. IMR4759, 5744, VV N-110, are the new 'book' powders and work well with mis-fires not being a problem. The 4227 will likely be okay with tight fitting bullet/sabot. JMHO

I haven't seen loads for with RL-10 anywhere but haven't looked at the Savage Ml borads in a while either. ;) :cry:

I have used N-110 for about 4 years now... No issues at all with it... Shoots really good and no misfires...

I've been using the IMR4227 since I got my muzzleloader several years back. It was the recommended powder back them but since then has fell from grace due to misfires. I've always used 300 grain Hornady XTP magnum bullets in the long MMP sabots and Winchester primers and haven't had any problems whatsoever and have harvested several deer in all kinds of weather. I think most of the problems were with lighter bullets. I've got some of the IMR4759 and AA5744 powders which are supposedly better but haven't used them in the muzzleloader. It shoots near MOA at 100 yards and hasn't been a problem so I've never seen a reason to change powders from my initial loads. I wouldn't use IMR4227 with bullets lighter than 300 grains. Randy Wakeman has worked a lot with the rifle and he recommends AA5744 for one of the best all around powders.

Same here. Shot some of the IMR4227 powder and had some ignition issues that cost me a doe and a bobcat. Switched to 42 grs of VV N110 and have had nothing but excellent results. One of the first Savage ML-II without the accutrigger. 240gr XTP, MMP Sabot and Federal 209 Primers
