Savage Rascal

So my son is asking Santa for a 22. I've been looking into the rascal as it's small and compact for him.
He is 9 and is deer hunting with 350 legend.
I'm just worried it will look to much like a "toy".
He is really wanting to go squirrel hunting after deer season. I tried to talk him into using his 20 guage or asking for a 410 but he wants a 22.
I have a Ruger 10/22 but the LOP is a little long.
Not really wanting to spend over $250 as I want to get him a bow as well.
Just wanting some info as I'm not a squirrel or rim fire guy.

Not in your budget but a CZ 457 Scout is a great starter rifle. Lots of youngsters start on them and replace the original stock with a standard size as they grow up. They are well worth consideration.

Yea with all the research I've been doing that seems to be the best but I can't swing that and a bow. Honestly I want to put money in the bow lol squirrel is good to eat just a lot of work for 1 meal.

I bought my oldest a cricket. It's terrible. And she outgrew it in a hurry. Honestly, you could probably upgrade to a savage mark 2 and you'd have a much better rifle that'll last him much longer.

I bought my nephew a rascal years ago. It functioned and shot decent enough. It was a big step up from the cricket.

My daughter has a rascal. No complaints other than it being pink. Shes 8 and can see her growing out of it soon…maybe? I'll then carry that thing around when running traps

I have two safe queen "Cricket" 22LR stainless rifles... nice price point but the kids outgrow them so fast... My son was very accurate with his Cricket while my daughter may have shot 5 rounds through hers.

I think they may be better for gator fishing like you see on "Swamp People."

I think my daughter was about 5 when I get hers. I can't shoot open sites and sure can't teach it. By the time I got a scope on there it sat so high it was uncomfortable for me to shoot. It's just a poor design. Doubt it's been shot more than 40 times. I wish I would have just bought another heavy barrel savage mark 2 when they under $200 lol.

The swamp people comparison is pretty spot on. Or a rifle when you run traps.

Find you a 10/22 carbine and shorten the stock. The bass pro flyer had a synthetic model for I wanna say 279

I got my son one some years ago. They a decent little guns. However, if the rascal isn't already to small for a 9 year old, I'm going to say it will be before very long. I have a plain mark ii, I think it is that I bought for a cheap not worry about 22 that I got at Walmart. It was just like $150. I would definitely look at it before I bought the rascal, if you don't want to spend much.
