I just bought a used savage ml -II today. Its the camo stock with stainless barrel with a Leupold vx-2, 3-9 x 40 in leupold rings &bases . The previous owner shot 250 grain shockwaves in the black hornady sabots. He said it shot best with 49.5 grains of IMR 4297. After reading the recommended loads from savage I thought this may be too many grains to use ? So that's my question, is that load suitable and safe or should I try the n110 in the 43 gr neighborhood? Obviously the gun can handle that load ( since thats what he shot ) but I don't reload and am not familiar with the different characteristics of powders. Thanks in advance!
 
IMR 4227 was a recomended powder early on in the Savage manual but it lost favor with a lot of folks myself included due to its having ignition issues. You will hear of very few who use it with out any problems.I will never use it again. I do not even remember what charge weights I used back then so I can not tell you if the load he gave you is correct.N110 is a excellent powder and personally I would not take it past 42 grns as N-110 has a quick pressure rise and will blow sabots in summer heat at 42 grns.You can expect 2350 fps at 42 grns of N-110."Neighborhood" with Smokeless powder will get you into trouble.All charge weights you see in the manual are "max" recommened weights.AA5744 is a good choice for 250 grn bullets as well. 44 grns of 5744 will get you into the 2150-2200 fps arena. Not blazing fast but will kill a pile of deer.
 
I looked through my .50 cal range notes and here are some powders and starting and stopping points.Start on the LOW end and work up.
N-110.40-42 grns-2200-2350fps
IMR-4759-42-46 grn-2250-2400fps
Reloader-7 63-69 grn-2450fps+
IMR-4198-68-75-2350-2800 fps

I had planned on shooting the hornady sst in the black hornady sabots instead of the red ones the bullets come with. After doing some reading on some other forums too it seems that the 300 gr and the map sabotage are more preferred. Will the load I had planned on using be suitable? While longer shots are possible the majority will be the usual 100 yards or less. The previous owner shot the black hornady sabots and 250 gr shockwaves so I figured I'd pretty much stick with what the gun had shot well with the only change being a different powder which will probably be the IMR 4759 or AA 5744 ( if I can find any ) .

I have a pound and a half or so, but figured I could never have too much, right? :) If you are ever looking to dump some, let me know, but it is nothing pressing at this point. As always, thanks for the offer and your generosity Steve.
