Woohoo brothers. I am on the apple pie tonight and feeling good. That being said, I have a 1991 model 110 that I have ordered the cut pillars for, and I am wondering about a thicker recoil lug. With the Savage style barrel nut, do I simply tighten down the barrel nut once proper spacing is achieved, or do I need to have the barrel machined to fit the receiver based on dimensioning after lapping? Any info would be mas appreciated!
 
Get a go gauge in the chambering you have.
Punch in "go gauge" on midwayusa.com and you should find what you need.

Remove ejecter
Install barrel, lug, and barrel nut loose
Chamber go gauge
tighten the barrel to where it meets the gauge by hand.
Tighten the barrel nut

You should be good to go.
If you want to check it get a "no go gauge" also or put a couple pieces of masking tape on the back of the go gauge. The no go should either not chamber or be really hard to chamber. Do not force it.
 
Lot of Savage owners out here, hows about detailing your effort with pictures? I have never done this but am interested in what the process is like. There are a lot of older Savages I have seen with badly pitted bores for sale cheap and a new barrel would fix them right up.
 
Since i'm not a gunsmith i don't think i can say what i want to but if a buddy were in my area with a stevens/savage and all parts needed...... we might could put together a detailed post.
i have .223 and .308 family go gages. (308 covers 243 Win, 260 Rem, 7mm-08 Rem, 308 Win, 338 Fed, 358 Win)

I kind of went thru the same thing, except I had a new barrel to install. I know this isn't as much fun but for about the same price as the tools required (headspace guages and barrel nut wrench) to do the job, you can ship your rifle off to sharp shooter supply and they will do it for $75 plus shipping.
 
Thanks Fast. That's kinda what I thought, but didn't know if anyone else here had already done it. Dave, there will be a pic intensive post coming soon. This 110 is getting pillar bedded, thicker recoil lug, bolt jeweling and barrel free floated. My only hold up is that i can't decide between using the factory wood stock or buying a composite. I know the pros/ cons to both, I just can't decide.
