Savage 99

I am wanting some opinions on the Savage 99 in the 300 savage,308 or 30-30. How do they shoot and what are some pitfalls? What are the pros and cons? What caliber would you buy in this gun? What should I expect to pay for one of these? I am looking to buy a Savage 99 & a Winchester pre 64 this year.

I have a 99M in 308. Dont expect match grade accuracy out of one, but it will hold 1.5" groups @100 yards, so its accurate enough for deer hunting. The triggers can be a little rough, mine had a trigger job b4 I bought it, and its a little better than others I have picked up, but its still not great. The gun carries great,and feels good in your hands. If you can find one, get an older version, they were made better. Look for cut checkering and nicer wood versus the pressed checkering and often plain wood on the later models. If you find one with the safety mounted next to the lever its an older version verus the one with a tang mounted safety. My BIL has a 99 made in the late 20s in 303 Savage, its a takedown version and is worth some serious bucks. I would like to have a couple more 99s, a 250-3000 and a 300 Sav. I have a pre 64 model 94 and model 70 as well, both very nice...you have good taste!

The earlier ones are grand old classic rifles. Get an EG in 300 Savage that is a pre mil.(serial number lower than 1 million). Any of the pre mils in good shape would be a great rifle. There is a lot of info over on 24hr campfire under Savage Collectors forum. PH

I personally own a .300 Savage 99 w/brass rotary magazine. It was handed down to me by my late uncle, it was his favorite rifle of all.

It is by far my most prized gun I own. It is a pre-40's gun, shoots very well with my handloads, it really loves the 180 gr. round nose bullets the best. As Kimberman stated they carry really well and will lay the smack down on a deer. In the day, they were considered one of the top calibers for deer hunting, it met it demise when the .308 came on the scene.

I liked the caliber so much, I bought a Remington 700 BDL limited edition in that caliber. Recoil is very tolerable as well.

As far as cost goes, with todays market for guns..........it will depend on the seller. I could no put a price on mine. I would take a Savage over the Winchester any day of the week, but that is just my opinion.

I have one handed down from my grandfather in 300 savage. i cant say enough on how good this gun feels in your hands. they are accurate and ahead of there time. mine is a pre- million model. thats what you need to look at. i would personaly get the 250-3000 or 300 savage. there are a lot of newer guns still made in 300 savage too. good luck ill think youll love one

I have a 99 Savage in 308 Winchester. The gun carries great is easy to carry in a scabbard on horseback ,and feels good in your hands when you shoulder it. Always look for the older version they were made better with cut checkering and nicer wood versus the pressed checkering and often plain birch wood on the later models.
