I just bought a savage 110 in 30/06, the fellow also threw in a 308 barrel for it...Here's my question, is there a guide or manual for the amount of head space when changing the barrels? I contacted the manufacture and they stated the barrel already has rings on it for the head spacing. Does this sound right?

get a set of go/no go guages from midway, the safest most easiest way to set head space. when changing the barrel screw the barrel in on the go guage until snug by hand, then back it off about 1/16" turn, then tighten the barrel nut. then take out the go guage and put in the no go guage. the bolt should not close on the no go guage if you have it set right, if it does loosen the nut and adjust the barrel. you can place a witness mark on the barrel to speed things up next time. the barrel may or may not already have witness marks on it from the factory. i doubt it since they dont like the switch barrel crowd.

you will need a barrel nut wrench(for the correct type nut), action wrench and a vise to do it. when you get used to switching barrels you'll be able to do it in ten minutes.

What you heard isn't right. You need a go gauge to use when installing the barrel. Some people do it with a cartridge case but it's not that reliable. You can get a go gauge for less than $20 but will also need an action wrench or barrel vise and a Savage barrel nut wrench. The go gauge for a 308 will work with any of the family of cases based on the 308 case but if you want to change back to the 30-06 you'll need a go gauge for that case also. I use a piece of thin Scotch tape on the back of the go gauge instead of buying a no-go gauge. This works and saves a little cash.

used the scotch tape when i first started switch barreling, it works too.

havent seen the new actions since they went to a smooth nut, havent heard anyhing about factory witness mark though. savage may have been talking about the new ones.

You will also need a .308 mag box and follower for it to feed right since the .308 cartridge is shorter and fatter than .30-06.

it will feed just fine. besides you cant put a short action mag on a long action 110.
