I own a few Savages. They are accurate shooters, but if I were buying a rifle of that dollar range, I would buy a Tikka T3x, Browning X Bolt, or a Bergara.

I'd buy a stainless version of any of these, and unless you plan to long range elk hunt then I'd probably get it in 30-06, 270, 7-08, 308, etc. There is no need for a 300WM for deer, and especially at the cost of ammo, recoil, and muzzle blast.

But the 300WM is a great cartridge and widely available.

And stay away from the muzzle break. Your eardrums (and others around you even more) will thank you

I do have elk in mind when purchasing the 300 win mag. Sinc my divorce I have got my finances where I like and am to the point in life where I think I'm ready and able $$$ to start planing some western hunts.

I will take a savage over Tikka , 300wm is a great round, very versatile imo , I use 150g for deer and can go up to 220g factory loads . most of the savages are great shooters with out having to do much ore than finding the ammo they like. you can pay more for a rifle but its your $ and other folks like to spend it more than you lol

Mike speaks the truth. Dont think I've ever seen a Savage that wasn't a shooter, and it looks like they have made some nice improvements with the stock cheek height and lop adjustability. Accutrigger is also nice and functional.

I'm also a fan of tikkas, but only the all stainless models. Seems the blued models have a tendency to develop surface rust easily. Tikka stocks, even the t3x improvements still are not my favorite.

I like Browning, but I've never owned one. The newer hello canyon models look really sharp, and Browning also seem to hold their value and sell well used if you might ever want to sell it.

Back to Savage rifles, im a fan and confident you would get one that shoots well. 1/2 to 3/4 moa is what I would guess, but definitely under 1moa. Thats my experience with model 10 and model 12 rifles. Dont shy away if it has all the features you want and at the right price.

For clarification, I don't hate Savages. I just don't like a few things about them for that kind of money. I like them for an inexpensive, yet accurate, rifle whose quirks don't bother me due to the price (I own 4, and will likely buy one or two others in the future for the kids and/or to make a switch barrel gun). Examples below:

I have replaced two extractors on my 116 since they wear quickly and easily. Cheap, easy fix, but don't like it when I can't properly cycle another round in the field.

I have had to replace the firing pin spring in my 116 as well since it would not fire on a buck in the field (light primer strike that happened again later at the bench before I figured out the problem)

Bolt release is funky and cumbersome

Bolt travel is kinda sloppy

Aftermarket parts are not as available or as "standard" as many other brands, and it would take a little bit of history to explain the "whys" on this

I've learned a lot about Savages, and now know several things to look for. They are easily fixed. You can also change barrels easily, and customize them if you know what to shop for. They are usually very accurate right out of the box, but sometimes have rough bores that need to be broken in or else they foul easily. I just think that you can get a nicer rifle for that kind of money, and likely just as accurate as well.

Ultimately, pick what fits you the best. Fit and feel are largely subjective, and if the Savage fits you better than other brands then I doubt that you will be disappointed by it.

Check out tsswarehouse. They usually have Bergara on discount if it's a brand you're interested in.

I've got one in 6.5 PRC. It's heavier than what I would consider a mountain rifle but it looks good and shoots even better. Check out bass pro flyer. Think they've got it coming up on sale for $899 if you got one close by.
