Saturday in the woods

Saturday was suppose to be a wash out but I really needed to plant my soy beans I had. I bought some of the Eagleseed soybeans and was excited to plant them. Of course I have no food plot implements so most is done with sweat equity. I was glad to get the rain because I was broadcasting the soybeans. Here are a few pics of my trip.

Steven shouldn't complain about having elk in his neck of the woods but I guess I can because I am in PERRY county. :grin:

This may be silly to most but when I bought this place it needed a lot of work to get it where I wanted it. I thought it would take years to get this pic but I was shocked when I pulled up to the gate. Yes it is ONLY a hen but it was AWESOME!

Here is where the soybeans are going. The left side is the "tree plot" and will be planted in clover in the fall but the right side goes back almost 200 yards. I need more soybeans to finish the back 1/4.

Here is the tree plot. You can't see all of them but it is still in process, I also have around 40 trees at my house that I will transplant next year. In the fall like I mentioned it will be planted in clover.

Here is my peach tree. Fruit wise this year willnot be as good as I hoped. I had several bloomed out but may have got hit with a late frost.

Here is one of my crab apple trees. They are all loaded. Glad to see that. The pic doesn't show them very well but they are looking really good.

I picked up my trail cameras and didn't have as many pics as I was hoping but I did have a few bucks starting to show up. With a low deer density I am hoping for the best this year. It is starting to get very THICK except for the areas recently cleared. It is shaping up nicely. Another 10 years and I may get closer to what I want it to look like. Ha! I hope everyone enjoys the process with me.

All of these were planted this year. The fruit trees that are larger are from Lowe's and the rest are from a nursery. When I was picking out the ones from Lowe's I looked for the wants that didn't appear to be streesed. The first few days they arived I bought them. I planted them asap! I think that helped. In the future I will buy all from a nursery because they seem to be healthier all around. Not sure how long before crab apples are suppose to produce but these are little bitty guys.

Somebodies pet must be loose. A bull will do some serious damage to trees that you've spent alot of time and money on. Great pics, I think your place is looking great.

A guy down the road has a few exotics. This cow is visible from the road in a cow pen. I came around the corner and just about had grilled elk. She was standing in the road.

Sounds like a place I hunt sometimes in Watertown,we see sheep goats Fallow deer,theyre all free ranging now,its crazy,but see plenty of deer too.

Looks good Rich. I'm glad that fruit cocktail tree is producing for you! Ours never did that, that young. It looks as though it is a little different kind of fruit cocktail than ours. The leaves look totally different. Anyways, all of our trees looked good this weekend too. Our peaches arent quite as big. Your trees look very good. Good luck with them!

JC, Sad to say that the fruit cocktail doesn't appear to be one of the producers. The peach tree and one regular apple tree is though. I am keeping my eye on them and should know in a week or so.

I purchased them at Home Depot in Franklin. If you want I will see if they have any more. I may buy a few more to plant in the fall.

FH - We got all of our trees in Whites Creek I believe. If you are on the west side of Nashville, and get onto Briley Parkway, it's just an exit or 2, then its only 1-3 miles off Briley. I should remember b/c I was just out there in Feb getting some more apple and cherry trees. It is kinda out there, but they usually always have a huge selection of fruit trees. They had alot of trees last time I was there. Might want to consider them next time you get some, they are very nice and are very knowledgable on all that type of information.

I am working on several projects on my property and when I get closer I would like to start this. I may start a post and see how many are interested.

I'd pinch them fruits off. They are a strain on your young trees. You need for those trees to focus their growth on roots and not setting fruit.

sounds good RMBBQ. Id be happy to have some input. Im in the early stages and with masters and work its been a slow go but enjoying the heck out of it.

That might be a fun thing to do during the dead summer period once plots are in and all. Hopefully all my new trails will be cleared by then.
