Sapelo Island Adventure

Had another great quota hunt this year on Sapelo Island. The Blackbeard Island subspecies deer don't get very large but the hunt is so enjoyable and the Georgia DNR runs the hunt so well. You pick an area, load up on a trailer, and get picked up and dropped off at that area on the main road. Camp has a bathhouse with hot showers, plug ins, skinning shed, and a walk in cooler. A ferry or private boat is the only way over. The DNR staff even have a dog and a thermal scope to assist in game recovery if needed. Piebalds are not common there, I actually had to text the hunt manager to see if it was legal. I can't say enough how great the GA DNR runs the hunts I've been on. It's a stark contrast. The snakes and the bugs are what turns people off of this hunt. I'll let the pictures tell the rest, 2 deer and 2 hogs, 3 of which were taken with the old hawken.

I read where the Blackbeard archery hunt is the oldest annually managed archery hunt within the federal refuge system. Lost of history on that place .

Congrats on a cool swamp hunt!

We generally hunt Wassaw Island to the north. One of the guys i went to college with runs the hunt for the USFW. Deer hunting while watching the waves crash on a beach is pretty cool. I would recommend this type of hunt to everyone just for the fun factor.

it'll be a soft tan. I have no idea where it's going. Trust my taxidermist to send it to a good place.

Super cool hunt!!! I've looked into doing some of these island hunts in the past but never got around to figuring out the logistics around them. You've kind of rekindled the fire. I like that you had a couple kills with the traditional muzzleloader too!
