Sandbags question

Do you guys who shoot alot buy sandbags somewhere, or do you make your own? My Step-son now has a membership to a shooting club on Brownsville Rd. near Memphis, but he says the range doesn't have sandbags. I thought a Christmas present idea was just born, but how do I go about it?

I make mine out of ripstop fabric from walmart, fill em up with dry rice. My mom was a Martha Stewart type, taught me how to use a sewing machine when I was a kid. Heck, I can even set a 20 piece setting for a dinner party with the little cocktail forks and everything :)

Gosh, I miss my mom... but I digress

I use empty shot bags. Fill em with sand and sew em shut.

ole blue jeans cut off at the knee sowed up on one end filled with sand then sewed up on the other end works well also,,for field use

for bench use its hard to beat a good set of leather bags and a Sinclair rest

I use sand filled soft lunch bags/totes (the ones that are insulated and have carrying straps)for the front, and burlap rice bags for the rear. They work pretty good for being on the cheap.

Basspro carries Caldwell bags, get a front and a rear bag for the best stability.

I use the Protektor bags. I used to use some bags made out of pillow ticking that my wife made me that were filled with playsand. I used a couple stacked for the rear and one over an ammo can laid sideways for the front. I don't know if I shoot any better with the factory bags but they're more convenient. I use a couple of different mechanical rests that are part factory and part my own making under the front bags according to the rifle size.

Protektor are among the finest out there, little high but worth the money.

If your are looking at bags with ears , make sure they are wide enough to work with your rifle forearm. If the forearm is flat , I use bluejeans that are only partly filled with sand . I can lay them on the rest top and by folding them , and pounding in the forearm get a real nice tight setup for benchrest.

Thanks, guys. These are some great suggestions. I'll look into several of these and make a decision. I kind of like the handmade suggestions. I've got my mother-in-law's old sewing machine and I might have to put it to use again...

i use burlap bags flled with rice also. they do a good job and dont have to pay near as much!!

If you've got vending machines in your office, ask the guy who fills them up if he can get you some old money bags. My buddy had some, filled them with sand, and they work great.
