Great book if any of you are ever interested.
All of it is a good read for any outdoorsman and sportsman. This book was written I believe in the 1940s. But mainly what brings me here about it is his chapter called "Wildlife in American Culture."
In this chapter, he is talking about the modernization and mechanization of hunting. Says the word gadget a lot. How hunters just try to buy gadgets to make it easy on themselves to kill an animal. Taking the sportsmanship out of it. Having periodicals state where the best place to fish is.
70/80 years later, here we are. Turkey decoys, eighty yard shotguns, straight wall centerfire rifles for deer during muzzleloader, chasing seven pound bass on livescope, crippling ducks passing at 60 yards, and a whole lot more.
I wasn't around back then. But I feel like maybe in the 90s to early 00s we were pretty good at being ethical sportsmen, not bragging about everything we did.
I try to be a sporting as I can. I'm all about using the older techniques and weapons. Sometimes though, they just aren't available to use unless you can build it or make it yourself.
Just going in circles. Hopeful this trend of shooting animals just for internet gratification will get out of outdoor sports.
