Remember that winter draw down is happening on the TN river right now. I know most probably know this but I saw a ski boat this past weekend doing about 40 mph going across a mud flat come to an immediate stop once they hit the mud flat. Thankfully it was mud and they weren't going any faster. If you dont know the water very well, its not the time of the year to figure out how deep an area is while on plane haha

I have a friend that has a big ole fast bass boat.
He routinely runs at night at full throttle.
No way would I do that, ever.

^^^^reminds me of a california yankee neighbor that i warned about beaverdam stumps and humps in late summer. the last thing he yelled at me is "i know what the **** im doing". he got one day of enjoyment out of that boat with no insurance on it.

Even with the best mapping there is no guarantee that there isn't a broke down boat, an anchored fishing boat with no lights, or a million other things on his marked trail. My boat will only run 65 MPH and I can tell you things can happen fast on the water above 60MPH in the daytime. Much less at night. I trust my mapping (maybe too much) running an established trail that I have run before, through standing timber in the daytime, but night time is a completely different animal.

We've run aground on the mighty Mississippi several times where the "latest navigation charts" showed main channel with 50' depths. You never know where a sand bar or high point may be slowly accreting and impact your travels at certain stages that it did not years prior. Safety cannot be overinfluenced when in a boat.

at least youll slide over a big rock. you hit a mud flat or gravel bar pretty fast and things come to a stop pretty quick, lol.

I've seen people run through places I wouldn't even take a kayak through and somehow not get stuck or rip the lower unit off. I don't see how they do it.
The guys around here put a lot of faith in the sonar charts. I'm sure they do it at night too but here, it is notorious for being super foggy. I've seen the Hiwassee River so foggy that it was like a wall...couldn't see 10 feet through it. And boats running wide open down it...trusting 100% on electronics. Stupid.

Recently went to the Mississippi River near Fort Pillow. The river was really low, and I could see lots of driftwood sticking up out of the river. Just because you can't see something, that doesn't mean it's not there!

people rely on their eyes too much in the fall and winter. the exposed flats look like water from a distance especially if there is a little chop. its an optical illusion of sorts. when you are able to see it then its sometimes too late if your running fast.
