Safe shot planning

Clearly, having houses and other places frequently occupied by persons or pets within your hunting area makes for some unsafe shots.
My question is, how far away is an "occupied" zone safe to shoot toward?
The parcel in question has hardwoods but some houses are within a mile from the hunting area.
If I'm shooting a 30-.06 for example, what distance can I use to plan a safe shooting spot when the potential stray projectile would be entering hardwoods first?
Is there a rule of thumb for this?

Many will say you don't/can't shoot towards houses. Not that I don't agree but, there are factors that raise the safety level. Any line drawn from a pointed gun "could" strike someone or something. Density of woods, distance through the woods, and angle of shot. Is your shot from a tree stand aiming down to the ground? A ground blind where a 30-06 drops 40"@500yrds? Educated safety.
