S&W AR 15 vs Colt AR 15

A lot of people will say Colt because it says Colt. I would buy whichever has the features you want, and if they have the same features, get the cheaper of the 2. I don't put a lot of stock in the "Colt is better" crowd. I lost respect for Colt when they caved to the antis in the mid 90s.
 
They are both great firearms. The main difference in the M&P15 and the Colt6920 is the Colt has a standard 1:7 twist. The M&P15 has a 1:9 standard. Unless you are planning on getting into the higher grain ammo, the 1:9 is fine. I went with the M&P15OR optics ready model.
 
If you are buying the rifle to keep forever go with the Smith and save some money. If you think you might sell it at a later time get the Colt. The name makes it worth more to some folks. Quality wise though just flip a coin. Both are equal IMO.

I have one of each. The S&W eats gas rings (change them about every 1000 rounds) but other than that they are both awesome weapons and will be as acurate as the shooter wants it to be. My Colt is much quieter to shoot though!! :D

Kind of the same way I feel about Mr. Ruger.I'd get the Colt,just for the simple fact I've had and shot both as well as many other manufacturers and to me the Colt just seems built better with better components compared to the Smith,but that's just me and my observation.YMMV.
 
If you ever get the notion to resale it, you might have a harder time with the sale on a pieced together weapon. A factory built rifle will sale quicker than a frankengun. I know from experience, I've bought and sold a few AR's.
 
i already have a S&W but i was thinking about getting another ar and was looking at colt or another S&W and the more i look at it i think S&W is gonna be it, Colt is just seeming to be a little overpriced and the more i hear from others the quality is good but it aint as good as some others so.... yea, with that said i have made it a point to never own a colt cause my brother has always veered me in another direction cause he hates colt so naturally i wanna try one out for myself. so, i have a dilemma on my hands i guess.
 
Ok, so you already have a factory AR. You've probably come up with a wish list of things you'd like yours to have. Why don't you make one exactly like you want it? The beauty of the platform is you can build as much or as little of it as you want (or have the skill/tools to). Save up and buy a little at a time if you need. You can put that Troy battle rail or Geissele trigger in it if you want, but at least this way, you're happy with the end result because it is your own creation.
 
i have gone over that in my head several times and i really want to do that and i think... i just... found a way to do what i want... build 2 uppers and switch them back and forth... sometimes it just takes another set of eyes!!!! THANKS

A Colt AR is what all others are compared too. Either you have a Colt or your always saying it's just as good as a Colt. ;)
