Food Plots Rye Grass

I put my food plots in the last weekend of August. I went and checked them today, the turnips and alfalfa are up and growing. The plots I put rye grass in are still bare dirt. Am I missing something? Ive never planted rye grass before but i was under the impression I would come up first almost as soon as you planted it. Any ideas?

If it's rye grass vs. grain and there was a way to kill it and start over I'd consider it. With rain in the way and cooler temps you still have plenty of time to get a good cool season crop in the ground.

Yes it was rye grass. Ive never heard of rye grain. Is one better than the other.

Id leave it many mixes has rye GRASS in it anyway. Ive seen some very good results with rye grass in the mix. Stays green and comes on strong. Spray it early spring and its done. There are better choices but RG is inexpensive especially when planting larger plots of couple acres.

Rye grass has little nutritional value for deer.

Ryegrass gets a bad rap . I have tested ryegrass in mixes and as a stand alone crop in southern lincoln county over the past 5 years. Deer did use both plots. I was told it would take over and be uncontrollable but I haven't saw that in my test. For a cheap and easy plot I prefer a wheat, oat rye grain blend but wouldn't hesitate to use a blend that had rye grass in it.

Absolutely, if planting for deer use rye grain, not rye grass, it has almost no nutritional value for deer and I would plant wheat, and or oats mixture before either .
