Since our lease is being logged we are planning on planting Rye and winter wheat on the sides of the roads and maybe a few small areas for now until they are completely finished.

How well do you think this will work?
 
That's part of the reason we are going to plant it. We know it will grow wherever we plant it. We have a lot of areas that we know are not going to green up this season and thought it may help some.

As long as you are using grain rye and not ryegrass, I like rye better than wheat for the first year or two after initial soil disturbance. Rye will grow on pavement, and grow tall. Mowing that tall growth down in late spring adds biomass to the newly turned soil.
 
Sounds like grain rye might be the way to go for us. I don't guess it will hurt to throw wheat in with it also. Will it?
 
I once did a side-by-side plot with wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In order of preference(the deer's) at that plot: 1) oats, 2)barley, 3) wheat, then rye. Mixes are good, wholeheartedly agree.

Your local co-op or some other farm supply store should be able to get the seed for you. With the wheat you might check with some local farmers that combined some wheat. If they still have some left it will be a lot cheaper. Just make sure he has the germination checked.
