TWRA did a study a few years ago confirming there was considerable breeding going on in January along the AL line. If a considerable percentage of does in your area are breeding mid-January, then a season ending early January only catches the rut-prep (cruising) phase. But if I remember correctly, the TWRA study did find a real hodge-podge of breeding dates across those southern-most counties, everything from some late November dates through all of December and into January.
