I recently got a gun in a trade. I gave it a good cleaning inside and out and there are some places I just can't seem to get all of the rust off of. It's not pitted or anything like that. You can't even tell it's there until you wipe it with a oily cloth. I have repeatedly tried 0000 steel wool and oil. The rags are still rusty. What's the best way to proceed? Just keep on keeping on with the steel wool or do something else?

I worked on it some more with 0000 steel wool and oil. I got it all on a smaller area. Looks like it will do it. It will just take forever.

We used tin foil in the Marines. Once the rust is off, take a pencil and rub all the shiny spots with the pencil lead (graphite) Shouldn't ever rust again in that spot afterward.

is one old trick and it works until the lead wears off/cleaned off.

Yep, it is a lot of work and is why you hear of weapons packed in cosmoline. Rust sucks.

I wouldn't go with Evapo-rust unless you want to reblue the gun, it will take it down to bare steel. Bluing is a form of rust. I stripped an old Knight muzzleloader with Evapo-Rust, it put it "in the white" quite quickly.
