What's the best way to break a dog from runnin deer. I know lots of people use trainig or shock collars. But what do you do when they're out of sight. You really don't know if he's runnin by scent or sight or if he's done runnin a deer and back to huntin squirrels. The past 2 times my dog has done good the first 45 min - 1hr or so. Going out to 150yds or so and checkin back in. Then he's gone. Tracked him 1.5 mile this mornin before I got to him. I didn't scold cause he's done forgot about what he done. I don't know that's what got him gone so quick but what else could it be. I'm still learnig as he is to. Thanks for any suggestions.
 
Was the squirrels down? Was he treed when you got to him? Does he open on the track? If your SURE hes on deer and in range of your e-collar, burn the hair off his neck! BUT BE SURE!
 
No he wasn't treed when i was close enough to hear him. When i got within 100-200 yds of him and me hollering for him he come to me. And he never opened on track. Only way i can possibly know or think he was on a deer is the straight line on the garmin for a pretty good stretch. And then he went back to circling around like he's back to huntin slowly gettin deeper.
 
Thats a tough situation to call. A lot of time if you know your dog well and how he handles and sounds on a track then you will know if he is on a deer or not. Even then it is tough to tell. I turned my hound out one night and he hit the side of the ridge wide open I mean makin an awful racket. I thought dang he is on a hot one there. But as I watched him on my Garmin he was coming up hot on the edge of a field. I had in the back of my mind all of the deer I had seen come out of this holler before but I gave him the benefit of the doubt until he was in and about halfway across the field. Aint no coon in its right mind gonna try to outrun a hound across a wide open field with 200 acres of ridge behind it. So the ole Tri-Tronic brought down the lightnin on him. When I picked him up he was wobblin down the side of the road with his tail tucked. Knock on wood I aint had any more deer trouble out of him. It is a judgement call that needs to be made right the first time. If you aint sure dont give him any juice but then again dont let it go too long. Good luck
 
Know what it is and if it's not what he is suppose to be on, then TriTronics. I have a 7 year old beagle that I have to zap every now and then to remind her that deer are a no-no. Good luck.

Find some deer and let your dog loose. This way you can see what it is doing. E collars are great. Light him up if he offers to run them.I usually don't get verbal with them. Just let the dog think that the deer is shocking him.
 
I have a 6 dog system from Tri Tronics and I have all 6 dogs on GPS. When I free hunt my dogs and they take off I go over and dial in the GPS to where I cross there path on it and then search for a track. If I find a deer track I light em up. What is hard is when it is a fox, or coyote and it isn't a "sure" thing. I have dumped them out on deer and lit em up and all that did was make them come back to me every time I even lightly shock em now. I hate that too.

YEP, or lock in big dog house with deer scent in bucket of water and enough food for 5 days(spray food and water heavy with deer scent)and lock in there and put sheet over it and spray heavy ever day for 3-5 days ,dont open it up or check on him till about 5th day.
