On the verge of popping on a 44mag rifle. Had a marlin 1894 a while back. Traded it off and have pretty much regretted it since. But I have also always liked the thought of a 44mag bolt gun to. Like the rugged 77/44. Which one to get?? Can't make my mind up.

JMO, but I'd go with the Marlin 1894. I'd look for a used pre safety model. I've got a buddy and a cousin that each have one in .44 mag and they've killed more deer than EHD with those things.
 
I would go with the 77/44. They are getting harder to find. I have owned and shot both. I really like the bolt action. Maybe you could also pick up the lever action later.
 
Agree with Matador on this. They are getting hard to find but I don't think you'd be wrong going with either one of them. I personally like the Marlin better but that's just my opinion...

In spite of being a bolt action fanatic mostly, I'd go with the Marlin 1894 If I had to chose. I'd not turn down a deal on a Ruger 77/44 though if I found one while shopping for a 44 Mag rifle. Either one is going to offer you a nice compact deer rifle that's perfect for woods hunting. I have a Marlin 1894 in 32-20 and I can tell you that it's a joy to carry. Your hand wraps all the way around the receiver easily. It's almost like carrying a stick rather than a rifle.

Someday I'm going to get a Marlin 44 Mag myself. I hardly ever shoot my 44 revolver anymore due to problems with it plus the muzzle blast is too ridiculous to be even remotely enjoyable compared to my 45 Colt. I could load it down to 45 Colt levels, which I did for years, but the 44 Mag revolver is at least 50% heavier than the Colt SAA to carry. In contrast a 44 Mag lever action carbine is much lighter than a full size rifle. Besides I need some way to justify all the 44 Mag brass I have stashed around.
