I'm thinking about getting a mini 14 w/ATI stock.

First what does ATI stand for? Doesn't say on the ruger site and no one seems to know.

Second......anyone have an opinion on the mini 14's?

Thanks

Not well known for their accuracy. I had one about 20 yrs. ago and sold it because I couldn't hit nothing with it.

This was the same experience I had with one I also owned around 20 years ago. Very poor groups with all kind of ammo. Maybe they have gotten better since then, maybe not.

The new barrels (made in the last 10 yrs) are as accurate as any other semi-auto, for the most part. For the money though, I would get a basic AR. So much easier to work on and upgrade and mags are dirt cheap and EVERYWHERE. You can actually get an AR for cheaper than a new Mini-14.

Dollar for dollar you will be better off and have a better gun if you was to buy an AR.

I have one of the first MINI-14s in middle TN and it is good for accuracy but some of the later ones are sorry .

The older ones that I've shot have been accurate. Maybe those 2 guns were flukes or something, but I've had cloverleaf groups at 100 with them.

I've got a couple of them, both are older guns and both are plenty accurate. The old pencil barrels we're known for stringing when ever the barrels started heating up but there are cheap things you can do to fix it. The action of the Mini is superb, mine never jam and are very dependable.

ATI stands for Advanced Technology International, thier Mini side folder stock is decent, I would reccomend it.

And heres how it shoots at 100 yards with cheap ammo.

You can pick up a good used Mini-14 right now for $400-$450 and they are well worth the money.

You definately have a good one. I think one like yours is more the exception than it is the rule. I have fired a couple, and they would be lucky to shoot baseball sized groups @100, and at 200 its about minute of Volkswagon. Most ARs are capable of accuracy as good or better than a bolt action, without having to buy a bunch of aftermarket parts and work on them. The Mini rifles might be able to shoot almost as good after some $ and some work, but after that point you could have bought an AR and been done with it.

True there's nothing wrong with AR's but the OP asked about Mini's. I have an AR as well, my Mini-14 just happens to out shoot it, and I have less than $600 total in it. The Mini-14 is a credable firearm in my book, from the start they weren't really designed to be a target rifle. I would say if a man is looking for something that's capabable of shooting a single hole group on a target at 100 yards why not purchase a bolt gun? To be honest I've had $200 Savages that hold better groups than any AR or Mini I've ever shot.
