I have a SS Ruger M77 (I believe Mark II) that I bought about 25ish years ago. I have always had big scopes with alot of adjustment on it until now. Now I am trying to put a smaller scope (don't use the gun much and want to set it up for close shots in thick stuff) but run out of adjustment before the scope zeroes. Anyone ever run into this and fixed it?

I've had to recenter the adjustments on a few scopes.
Turn the turret all the way up, then count clicks all the way down, then divide the number of clicks by 2 and come back up that many clicks.
Do the same for left to right.
I usually have to do it on used scopes, I don't exactly know the technicalities of it, just that it works most times when I have that issue.

There's a trick using a mirror but can't recall it. Seems like you put it up to the mirror and adjust to center. Hopefully somebody else will chime in on it.
??lol. I need to figure out how to get a scope to line on a rifle. Let me give some more info. I think the scope doesn't sit exactly straight on the gun....the machining of the stupid Ruger mount on the gun is off. It shoots about 24" to the left at 50 yards. The big scope I had on it had enough adjustment to zero, but now since I am putting a smaller scope on it doesn't have enough adjustment to zero (even tho to me a gun wouldn't probably be as accurate having to be adjusted like that). This gun is not my primary hunter, hence I don't want to drop a fortune on a big (6x-24) scope, plus I need lower power for thick stuff. I bought a Ruger to Weaver conversion, but it doesn't fit. Sorry for the confusion.

I would take off the rings from the scope and rifle and then replace the ring bases carefully back on the receiver dovetails making sure they seat properly. Maybe one of the ring bases or receiver dovetails is buggered. Maybe the barrel is bent-propped against truck tire and run over-it has happened. If the receiver is not milled square I would talk to Ruger-they will make it right IMO. Burris used to make signature z rings to fit the m77 but they don't anymore. These have the eccentric nylon inserts to help correct base misalignment or increase zero range for long distance shooting.
Take one ring off and turn it around. May have to do both like that. The scope on my muzzleloader is like that. I had to change my rings around until they finally worked

Do you have the right ring on the front/back? Ruger M77 rings are different heights for the front and back. The taller one has to go in the back. I know your issue is right/left, but you never know. The mirror trick is to look through the scope at a mirror close up. You can see the crosshairs in the mirror to move them to center. The counting clicks method that RSB mentioned is more reliable IMO. If it's not your primary hunter, I would send it to Ruger. They have a lifetime warranty.
