I have a question about the difference between the early model M77 rifles with the tang safety and the later model's with the bolt safeties. Is one preferred over the other? Is one better than the other?

The Mauser style safety is more awkward to many, especially lefties. The tang safety tends to command a premium

most of the ruger Tang safeties came came out prior to a lawsuit involving a trigger being too light as a result after they lost the lawsuit most manufacturers started making about 8 lb standard on all rifles. There is a noticeable difference in the trigger pull on the old ones and the new ones. I I think it was Marlin that got sued

Never an Issiue with the Tang Safety.
While a Claw extractor on both the Tang safety are push feeds while the Mark2 are controlled.
The triggers were user adjustable on the Tangs.not so with the Mark 2.

While I prefer the Tang nothing wrong with the Mark 2 Only shot a couple Mark 2 for friends a few times.
So that's all I can say.
