Looks really nice but you can build one from scratch for a lot cheaper. It is good to see companies like Ruger making the AR style weapons.
 
Great! Thanks for the info. Getting another major manufacturer into the AR arena can only be good. That particular configuration is a little too 'tactical' for my tastes but I imagine they will bring out a 'predator' hunting version with say a 18-20" barrel, drop most of the picatinny rail on the foreend, and in camo. That would make me buy one as I like Ruger firearms. The piston drive is nice-hope it is as accurate as the regular gas impingement ARs

Yeah Mr Big, I have been seeing your groups with that R15 and they are great. I like the rifle a lot--in fact I have one too!! :grin: :grin: I haven't been able to shoot groups like yours(or you most likely) but mine shoots minute of coyote!! Two shots, two kills up close and personal--20' on the big male. Story will follow in a couple of days on small game talk.

Questions for you AR guys form somebody that ain't into them.

Reading that ad on the Ruger it said it was "Piston" operated not "Gas".

What would that do to changeing calibers and such ??

Seems to me one would be limited in that with the Ruger as aren't most AR's are "Gas" operated ?

Wouldn't one need a "Piston" Upper or Barrel for the Ruger and not a "Gas" ?
 
Hey Tiny, All the ARs are gas operated. The common mode of operation in the AR is called gas impingement. The gas is tapped just in front of the forearm at the 'gas block' and the high pressure gasses are funneled back into the bolt carrier by a long thin stainless steel tube. The gas enters the carrier, forcing it back which unlocks the bolt and starts all the parts moving rearward to extract, eject, etc. This compresses the recoil spring which eventually starts everything moving back forward to chamber, lock and be ready to fire again. So the hot gases and carbon exhaust enters the action/receiver itself causing the rifle to run hotter and get dirtier. I carried a M16A1 for 10 months and never had a problem; the system works well imo.

The piston operated versions tap the gas in the same place; however instead of being channeled back to the action the gas acts on a piston which pushes a steel rod that extends back to the bolt carrier to push it rearward and cycle the rifle. Thus the piston operated rifles run cooler and cleaner in the action area. Technically it is probably a better solution but the impingement system works well as attested by 1000s of happy users and unhappy enemies. I wonder if the piston driven versions can be as accurate(without lots of attention to detail) as there is more cycling mass hanging out on the barrel in front of the action.

As long as the Ruger lower has the same hole spacing, pin size and mechanical ergonomics any upper(gas impingement or piston drive) should fit on the Ruger lower which is the 'firearm' portion as designated by BATF etc.
