I am planting 3 acres of RR Alfalfa with 2 acres of eagle seed soybeans. I plan on planting the alfalfa the first of april and the beans the first of may. Will the beans be able to establish with only having 2 acres? I was hoping the alfalfa would allow the beans to establish. My father wants the alfalfa for hay so that is why the 3 acres of it will be sown.

Not knowing the deer density ,I dont have a good answer,but if its pretty high,2 acres may get overbrowsed pretty quick.

Deer density and the amount of natural browse in the area will be critical. Your alfalfa will not be established good enough to pull them off the beans within that month,... sounds like you don't have a choice since your dad wants the alfalfa,.. but it would have been better to put the beans in the 3 acres and the alfalfa in the 2 acre,.. and i would have had to have clover in with that alfalfa myself.

Why not plant it all in alfalfa. It will grow faster and can take heavier browsing from deer. Beans will be hit by deer before the alfalfa and will not last long. The beans may be a little better than the alfalfa but not enough to make a difference. Also if deer was a big priority I would only cut half the field at a time then the other half after the first part greened back up. That way the deer will always have good food and won't look for an alternate source when field was cut clean.

I am planning on planting about .75 acres behind my house this spring, just as a test plot, since the deer will have access to about 60 acres of AG beans 20 yards away. Maybe they will make it?? I hope so, lol
