My only kill with round ball was in 1989 in CVA Hawkin.

162lbs 7 points.

I have killed a few deer with a round ball from a Kentucky rifle I built from a kit. I no longer hunt with that rifle but it was very accurate.
 
Dropped in his tracks. 95gr 777 and patched .490 RB

i have a short cva sidelock kit gun i bought at service merchandise many years ago,any more powder than 70 & you cant hit a pie plate at 50 yards,70g & you can ring the bell all day at 100y.i have another cva that is a inline made about 95-96 that dosent like more than 70 with a round ball,i reckon it blows the patch before it exits the barrel,barrel dia means a lot with any type of muzzle loader. i have found it costs much $ to play around with the diffrent loads so now when i find 1 that works for me i try to stick with it,i helped blood trail a deer that had a 250g shockwave ran thru it from the front chest cavity till it came out the ham ,it went 1/2 mile before my buddy caught up with it ,i think a powerbelt would have killed it dead within 100y or less,hard to say but id like to try it & find out :) ,mike243

you all use the pre greased patches ? ,i always have & shot the hornaday swagged balls.i might have done better with some diffrent patches but who knows :) ,mike243

I used to pre-grease my patches with Crisco. Like Loretta Lynn said, it will make proud every time- pillow ticking for patches.

Yeah I've always used the pre greased patches as well. I can't for the life of me remember what brand name the round balls are. I lost the package a long time ago and just carry them in a zip lock baggie.

My first CVA kit was the Mountain Rifle; bought it at an Osco Drug/Turnstyle store in 1977. It was serial number 0000000139.

The one in the pic above I built from parts (Sharron Barrel, L&R Lock) in 1985. The deer in the pic was shot in 2006. That was the last day I hunted with it. Figured I'd retire it "with a bang".
 
We always had the best luck with 90gr of pyrodex and a .490 ball with a plastic patch. Those plastic patches were so much easier than regular patches. Beware of putting the ball in the patch first. Seat the patch, then drop the ball in. Otherwise, it takes a ball puller to get it out.
 
Just let me show you fellows my age. :) My wife got my kentucky rifle kit at JC Penny. They used to sell a lot of guns back in those days.
 
gramps service merchandise was cheaper so thats where i bought mine :) ,they had a narinco {sp} browning 22 knock off for $125 & i only had $ for 1 gun that year so the CVA kit went home with me,i retired it in the 90's for another CVA & it was a inline.at this point & time i really dont need a savage but dang needing & wantings 2 diffrent things i keep telling my wife :) ,mike243
 
Mike, maybe she will surprise you with a Savage for Christmas. :)I was very happy with a T/C Renegade that I used for years, and my wife suprised me one year at Christmas with a T/C Black Diamond that she caught me looking at in a gun shop when I really did not even think she was paying attention.
 
I have shot several with patch and ball over the years, now dad shoots the TC Renegade, loaded with patch and ball with 80 grams of black powder.This buck is dads best one to this date!

I also use nothing but a Patched round ball..matter of fact have never used anything else! I always pour my own round balls as i can get them within 3-4 grains of each other.. I take my micrometer to the sewing store with me and buy cotton material that measures .18 and use a .495 round ball in my Hawken. I grease it with nothing but rendered Bear fat and can shoot 3 shoot groups that can be covered by a quarter all day long..I have hunted with nothing but a flintlock since coming home from Vietnam 30 plus years ago..Had a buck come straight at me a few years back and took him right thru the base of the neck.. Ball deflected up and traveled along the top of ribs and lacked less then a inch of exiting out the back by the tail..Anyone who says a round ball has no killing power does not even begin to know what he is talking about..I have chronographed mine many times and am putting out just about the same ballistics as a 30-30!
