Went camping/fishing last weekend at the Spring River with my dad and my little brother.
Got there Friday, and man, was it warm outside! We got our tents set up and fishing gear set up. The river was kinda murky, but not too bad. It was wadeable. It was worth wading in to cool off to beat the heat. Actually got a little too cool and decided to come in off the river. I didn't catch anything. I figured tomorrow would be a better day. Little Bro said he caught one rainbow trout on a flyrod, using an olive woolybugger.
I used a backup rod, since I never replaced my Berkley Lightning rod. And I felt it, too. Could'nt cast as easily, and just wasn't happy with it. I figured I'd change up and use one of the UL rods my dad brought.
Fast forward to early Saturday morning. Lightning, thunder, and RAIN. We got up later that morning, and noticed the river was up about a foot. And muddy. Just from seeing that, we knew the fishing was going to be bad. And MORE rain was expected that day. We noticed that the campground crew were removing picnic tables from campsites...which didn't look like a good sign. One of the staff came and told us, that although we didn't need to move right away, we needed to be prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice...especially if we got more rain and the river went up.
So we had a quick breakfast of cokes and donuts. :D We pondered the situation, and Dad came up with the idea of just packing up and getting a cheap motel and going to Bass Pro in Springfield. :D Sounded like a good idea to me!
Spent the day at Bass Pro, and I got another Berkley Lightning Rod. Light, 5'6 rod, just like the one I broke.
We went to Lassiter's Access Sunday morning before we hit the road. Man, that river was COLD. I used my new rod, and just from the first cast, it felt good. I am back in business! LOL I fished at the boat ramp for a few minutes and caught a good sized brown trout on a white roostertail. Probably every inch of 13-14 inches. I've never caught a brown trout up until that moment. From the way it fought, I thought it was a smallmouth bass. A few minutes, later, I caught another brown trout, although a bit smaller. And that was all I caught, but it was worth it!
A new fishing spot, my new rod, and a new type of fish caught...made for a good few hours fishing.
