Had the honor of hunting with Gunner a few times this year.
In the top 3 dogs I have ever seen in my lifetime. His human is a great guy too.
He was only 4 years old.
Last week he had diarrhea then started throwing up.
Liver was completely shot with cancer. It was also in his heart and lungs.
They buried him near the pit on Saturday.
Sucks.

Had a golden that was 16 years old. He was still very active. I was on a week duck hunting trip and on the third day that evening he started acting lethargic. At 2am he came up to me wining. Told my friend we need to go to the vet. As we walked to the truck he fell over dead. At least he passed doing what he loved. Most Goldens only live 10 to 12 years, so I was lucky to have a friend so long.

Just like deer, they have a strong will to live. My #1 was attacked and almost died at age 4. At age 6, she broke her right elbow. That was 11 weeks ago. She is still carrying that leg. It appears the screw is backing out of the bone. We go tomorrow for screw removal so hopefully she will put that leg to use again. She so enjoys hunting that I took her afield last week. She was in her happy place. We have a new GSP puppy to train who would learn a lot from mimicking her. I know, one day she will be gone, along with the other 6.

The Rainbows Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
