Rings & Bases Question

Let's say you're setting up a new muzzleloader or magnum rifle . . . . . .
and it's time to decide on the rings & bases for a 3-12 x 44mm scope.

I thought I wanted the Leupold Mark IV rings & bases, until I saw the price. Not worth THAT much more to me.

Well, forget the money part, let's just say you were now indecisive between the Burris Signature Double Dovetail rings & bases vs. the Burris XTR Xtreme Tactical rings & bases.

I like the fact you can mount a Burris Fastfire sight on top of the XTR front ring (could come in handy at close range when using a long-range scope), but I sure like those Signature rings, and can't imagine there's really much difference regarding which is the "stronger" set-up.

If you already had both, which would you use?

I prefer tactical type rings for most applications, but that's just me. Extra piece of mind/ insurance.

I would generally agree, but the Signature Double Dovetail is a pretty tough set-up.

I perfer the Standard Leupold/Redfield Type myself,Burris offers them as well, but if I had to pick between the 2 listed would likely go double dovetail.Seen no need for Tacticals on a hunting rifle yet.

I sure appreciate all the comments, and anyone who has more thoughts, please share.

I have the Talley 1-piece on my TC Triumph.
Without question . . . . . TOUGH.
But I believe may be a little more flexibility in scope positioning with either of the Burris models mentioned above. I'm mounting a pretty long 3-12 scope, and a little extra positioning room may be a plus.

I've been partial to the Standard Leupold, too, for most my life.
But isn't the Double Dovetail an even stronger set-up?

I know it's overkill, but I sure like the Burris tacticals.
There is one feature of these that sits them apart:
The picatinny ring top.
Since I hunt a lot in both heavy cover and sometimes where a longer shot is an option, I find that 1x Fastfire sight sitting atop a 3-12 scope a nice addition. This set-up is much like having a 1-12 scope instead of a 3-12.

I've never regretted using tactical rings on a hunting rig. I have had a few incidences which I regretted while using hunting rings on a hunting rig, though.

I've got a couple of rifles set up with the Burris Double Dovetails and have no complaints. Once they're there they're there. Did I say that?

Yes they are a stronger set up.

What I like best are those Signature RINGS, just see no reason not to go with the Double Dovetail bases if using the Signature rings.

On the other hand, the Burris tactical rings have that picatinny top, with their only disadvantge being a little less eye-relief adjustment range (since they're wider)?

I've never regretted using tactical rings on a hunting rig.

Shooting under 300 yards, I'm not sure a level would be of much value, although I can see it having great value at 400-plus yards.

I'm going to limit myself to what I believe are 90%-plus high-probability kill shots, regardless my rifle's capabilities at the range. In many of my hunting situations, this self imposition usually limits me to under 200 yards (usually WAY under). (Often, the shot presents when I have either no or a poor rest.) Then, beyond about 250 or 300 yards, I commonly have an ethical delimma when it comes to shooting at a deer vs a paper target --- wind drift. If everything else (distance ranged, great rest, still target) is near perfect, wind drift typically becomes the biggest limiting factor for me personally for considering a shot beyond 300 yards.

Although if the stars are all aligned perfectly and there's near zero wind, a bubble level could provide a little advantage on a little longer shot. Do you know where one can be had that's made to fit atop a picatinny ring top?
