I was just at the local Sportsmans Warehouse and they had the Burris MTAC 4.5-14x42 on sale for 349.99, and the Nikon Prostaff 5 2.5-10x40mm on sale for 199.99. I would go with the Burris myself as I have the MTAC 6.5-20x50 and really like it alot. The MTAC had the mil-dot reticle and 30mm tube, a lot of scope for the money imo.

Some people will stay pay a pretty good price for old Vari-X scopes, though. I guess it's the nostalgia factor.

The old Vari-X II was improved over a decade ago and renamed the VX-II. The VX-II was improved in 2012 and renamed the VX-2.

The Var X II is what I had in my original post. But actually I'm all messed up. It was the VX I. And it's $229.

I think Academy has the Prostaff 3-9x40 for $169 and the same one with BDC for $179.

Monarch hard to beat but just a little more or less......bid on ebay for mine....3x12x42.....great glass.
 
I have Nikon Prostaff series 3-9-50 on my 30-06. Give $330.00 tax and all for it. Also have Nikons 10-42 prostatic binos. There amazing clarity and rugged. Don't go cheap on your optics!!
