Rifle Scope for a smokepole?

I know they make scopes for a muzzleloader but with the times the way they are, resorces arent really there to purchase one. I was wanting to get some feedback from those whom have tried or used a rifle scope for the smokepole. Is there really THAT big a difference?
 
i have never owned a "muzzleloader" scope. my leupold compact does just fine.

i would not buy ANYTHING that says trashco on it. been there, done that and learned the lesson.
 
I've had an old cheap Simmons 3-9x32 on mine for over 10 years now. I just shot mine yesterday evening and hit a 10" diameter pumpkin at just under 200 yards on the first shot......
 
i had the same simmons on my muzzleloader that i replaced with the leupold. the 1st shot would be center. 2nd shot 3 inches high 3 inches left. 3rd shot 8 inches high 10 inches left 4th shot OFF THE PAPER! spend the money and get a good scope.
 
Simmons made some good scopes, you just have to know what to look for. The original 44mag and Aetec were quality glass, the new ones are china crap. The Whitetail Expedition is the holy grail of the simmons line, and the original Whitetail Classic scopes I would put up against the high dollar Nikons or mid level Burris' any day.

Im with stik on this one.You really get what you pay for when it comes to scopes..I have tried to skimp on rifle scopes and you end up getting what you pay for..You will end up getting a scope that doesn't respond to adjustments,or won't hold a zero..Just plain junk.Save up if you need to.. I have a leupold Rifleman 2-7x33 on my ML and I got it at walmart on clerance for $139..Its a very good scope,they aren't to much regular price either.

BSA stands for Better Sight it in Again. Most scopes made in Japan are wonderful, scopes made in the Phillipines are respectable, and most scopes made in China are crap. I like Leupolds as well, and have a few but I've never had an issue with any scope made in Japan or the Phillipines and I have them on high recoiling rifles and muzzleloaders. Your mileage may vary.
 
Most ML scopes and shotgun scopes have 1/2 inch clicks instead of 1/4 inch clicks that rifle scopes have. They are for the most part the same except for the click adjustments. 1.5-5 to 2-7 are typical.

Brands to shy away from are Tasco, Simmons, and cheap Bushnells.

Nikon, Burris, Leupold, Sightron, Weaver, and any European manufactured scope will handle the task and I would have the utmost confidence with one of them on my ML.
 
Bushnell Elite 4200 will set you back $300 but is the best scope I have on anything right now. Great optics and it has the Rainguard feature. I breathed on the lens and the condensation vanished by the time I raised the gun to my shoulder. It can take serious recoil. Do a search.
 
I am SHOCKED at how many people here can afford to put a Leupold on their weapons. I'd like to, but I have too many higher ranking priorities.

What ranks higher than being 100% sure of your optics? Id rather have a $200 gun and a Leupold on it than a $700 gun with a tasco on it!

Leupolds are expensive for what you get. IMO, they are overrated optically and mechanically. They are however light compared to most scopes and have a warranty that set the bar that many top optics companies have duplicated. There are numerous scopes out there with better optics for less money.

Why spend 100-150 more dollars on MAYBE 1-2% more accuracy? Doesn't make sense.

What ranks higher?

Clothes for the kids
Braces
Sporting Activities
Scouts

(I could go on...)

And, by the way, it's not just Tasco vs. Leupold. That's a false dichotomy. There are plenty of good scopes for 100 to 150 yard shots that are in between the two.
 
I use a Leupold M-8 fixed 4x. I'd rather have a more powerful one now that I'm upgrading to a savage, but I don't feel comfortable with a cheaper scope on it. If you shoot anything other than a $100 MZ I'd downgrade and invest the difference in the scope. Rounds and powder are too expensive
for me to fumble with sighting in much.
 
I'm going toward 2-7 power scopes on all my deer rifles. I think the only difference in an "ML" scope is the reticle, if that.

I have Nikon, Bushnell, Leupold, and Redfield on my guns now, but I see a Burris FullField II in the near future. Watch for sales and you can find any of these for less than $200. A scope below $100 is crap, so you're only paying $100 more for decent quality. Your annual license costs more than that.
 
What do you guys with expensive scopes do to protect them from the flash of the primer, assuming you have an inline with an open breech channel?
