rifle rest

I am looking to up grade my rifle rest. I have a cheap Hoppes, and would like to get something of better quality. I would like my budget to be 200$.I will use it for informal target shooting and sighting in my rifles.

I have shot a bunch of rounds off the Rock 1000 BR and it works pretty well,,it has a little play in the windage adjustment but is a pretty good rest for working up loads and shooting groups,,sometimes a better Hart or Sinclair will come up for sale used on Accurate shooter or other shooting sites used for 200$$,,after I used birdogs SEB I was hooked on the coaxial joystick but the pricetag and 6-8 month wait was more than I could stand and found a used Farley for a decent enough price,,the Rock is probably your best bet for that money but as much as I shoot I havent regretted getting the Farley,,

Use a Caldwell bag, learn how to anchor the butt stock with your left fist. Best real world shooting aide invented.

I have the Caldwell Rock but most of the time just use a pair of leather sandbags. I don't know if my experience with the Rock is normal or not but mine has a terrible wobble in the elevation adjustment. As you turn the big nut to raise or lower the rest, the rifle cradle sways side to side a LOT. Anytime you adjust elevation you have to adjust the rifle to get back on target. It's so bad that you don't have to be looking through the scope to see the wobble either. It's something you can live with but I was expecting better quality. Also, my Rock had another manufacturing problem in that one of the threaded holes that holes in the "feet" that you use to level the rest with had been drilled way oversize so that half the hole depth had no threads for the adjusting screw.

Obviously a Sinclair or one of the other true benchrest rests would not have these issues but they won't be nearly as cheap either. As I said earlier, most of the time I use an old 25lb lead shot bag filled with sand along with 2 good quality leather sandbags.

Cloth bag from reloading shot and sawdust. Light weight and darn near free.
