So what's everyone using...pros cons....? I'm going this weekend to buy a new one for the 06...I've used nikon for years and currently have one on my smoke pole, .270, and 7mag but several buddies are persuading me to spend the money for a VX2 in 3-9x40

Honestly, as long as eurooptic.com continues to sell the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 for $300, I see no reason to spend $300 on a VX-2 3-9x40.

i have all of them, but the vx3 leupold is the perfect combination of brightness, clarity, aesthetics, refinement and light weight. made in the use and backed by the best warranty in the biz. works for me

I've got ziess conquest and vx-3 both 3X9. I think the zeiss is a little clearer, but both are great....I'd buy the cheaper of the two if I needed another...

i like the zeiss scopes as well, but they are just too bulky and heavy for me taste and for the guns i hunt with. they are optically excellent, no doubt but man are they clunky

To me, it's more than just about the "clearness" or "optical" quality. It's also about long-term "tried & proven", i.e how will a scope hold up over time? Some scopes are manufactured to be "tougher", more durable than others. So it's not that some of the younger scope companies aren't producing excellent glass, but more a case I'm waiting to see how they measure up over time.

Hard to go wrong with a Leupold VX-3. :)

Leupold zeiss swaroski Nikon, ya'll are makin me look bad. Pretty sure I'm shootin a 15 year old Simmons. Its pretty fancy the bungee cord that holds the caps together is still good n stretchy lol

I have 4 Bushnells, 2 Leupolds, and have a Vortex on the way. Vortex is really emerging as an excellent value, and they have one of the best warranty and customer service outfits in the industry. That said, Bushnell and Leupold make some good optics.

Describe clunky. After reviewing the specs (length, weight, tube diameter, etc) for both models, I am having a hard time envisioning what this means. If you are comparing the popular VX3 2.5-8x36 as a reference point, then that explains some of it, but that is not an apples to apples comparison to a 3-9x40 specs.

Slowly, and I mean slowly, transitioning over to Vortex optics. The $ to quality ratio is the best on the market. They haven't been around long enough to ride on their brand name, so I feel like they put out legitimate quality optics that compete with other brands charging 2,3,4x as much for comparable products.

That's like saying I looked at Ford vehicles but wasn't impressed with the Fiesta.

For Binos, I've found that the Talon and Viper series are the best available option for under at least $1,000, probably $1500+.

Agree about the binos. I have the Viper HDs and absolutely love them. Furthermore, I have read some pretty hard line reviews of them on birding websites and they were consistently rated a 9 out of 10, with the 10 designations going to the $1500+ binos (Swaro, Leica, Zeiss, etc). I'd highly recommend them to a friend. I have not been overly impressed with the mid level rifle scopes, although I do believe they are a quality product with a great warranty, in a very competitive market.

My main concern is in regards to how much "punishment" they can absorb over years of abuse in the field, as airline baggage, etc. Time will tell, but in the meantime, the higher-end Leupolds remain "proven". :)

Dollar for Dollar Leupold gets the nod from me! Ive used several in widely varied conditions across much of the Country for many years now will excellent performance!

We all tend to want better, but once you get to the optical quality of a Leupold VX-3, how much better do we really "need"? At least when we're talking common magnification ranges of 12x or less. Until the magnification gets much higher (like 16x and up), I can't "see" a lot of difference between a VX-3 and some costing much more (nor some considered "better glass" costing less). I do "like" Leupold's VX-6, but more because of it's wider range of magnifications than it's clearer glass.

Total and proven reliability goes beyond optical clarity. As far as the "view thru the glass" is concerned, I would not feel handicapped with a Nikon Monarch or even a Burris Fullfield (which I think is an often overlooked scope in its price range).

That's like saying I looked at Ford vehicles but wasn't impressed with the Fiesta.

When I say lower end scopes it doesn't mean rock bottom entry level.
Dollar for dollar it's a competitive market and I haven't been impressed with the mid range vortex compared to mid range leupold. I'm sure they're a great scope with a excellent warranty.
When I look at scopes I try to compare all levels not just the high end.
I have too many guns to buy a 500-600 scope for.
