Rest advice needed

For those in the know, I'm attempting to.get my front rest set up for my long range 40 cal. The stock has a 3" wide forearm and the stock is lacquer finished so unlike my other bench gun with a lexan slider on the bottom of the stock, I need something on the rest that is slick and won't harm the finish. The rest is a Sinclair Heavy varmint rest with windage. I bought it probably 8 years ago. With the sides slid fully outward, the inside measurement is 5". All the aftermarket inserts/bags are 5 1/2" . Do I need to buy a different top or is there a bag/insert that will fit on this top ?

Yes it does. I was hoping to find a bag that would fit my windage top that is .5" narrower in width. I like the windage top for fine windage adjustments but it also adds a minor amount of play into the equation. The gun weighs 32lb so it's nice to have the windage adjustment rather than moving the entire gun/rest or gun/rear bag. I may have to buy the benchrest top to accommodate the 5.5" bags. I've been offered some material to fabricated a bag of sorts from. We aren't sure how it will behave with the stock finish.

Try a dryer sheet between the stock and the bag

If you call protector and tell them what you need they'll make you a bag to fit the rest and the stock

When I lost a piece from my shooting rest I went to the fabric store and acquired a linear yard of the thickest felt they had. Measured, cut cut cut until I had a thickness and length I wanted. Don't forget the last piece will be shorter than the first......measure each or have an X-acto handy. I have 4.
3 drops of glue across the long ends and my trusty clamps and I had the perfect stock protector/cushioned rest.

Now. Don't throw the leftover felt away. Make more than one. Watch how much glue you use.....lesser and lesser is betterer. Corduroy and similar materials are too abrasive for my taste. The dryer sheets are also a very good item to have in the range box.

That rifle is very impressive.
