Replacement Float for Fuel Gauge

I finally got around to taking off the fuel gauge on the tank for the outboard. The gauge would read empty even when full. Turns out the float/cork was so saturated it wouldn't float, so the gauge always read empty.

So, what would work as a replacement? Someone mentioned a wine cork coated in varnish. Easy enough. However, if there's another fix I'm not considering I'd love to hear it.

The tank was made by Tempo, and I can't find any parts for it anymore. I hate the idea of replacing anything more than just the float since it seems to be such a simple (Cheap) fix, but since it will be floating in gas I want to make sure whatever the replacement is will hold up to the fuel without breaking down too quickly.

all u have to do is go to a car junkyard and get a any late model float from a fuel sender. they are made from special plastics. do not use cork w any coating.they are just as bad as brass floats

Just FYI, it's amazing what you can do with an empty pill bottle, some JB Water Weld and a couple of cable ties.

Fuel gauge is operational again.
