Easy to dismiss, but there have been threads on here over the years of horror stories of folks having their pull rope snap and drop their weapon to the ground. It happened to me last year even. I actually had my replacement rope in my pocket, and was going to pull my ML up with the old one, then replace it and use the new one to lower it back down after the hunt...didn't make it. It snapped at about 4ft off the ground. Luckily, it hit square on the buttstock as if firing. Also, make SURE your weapon is unloaded for the lift! Good hunting everyone!
 
That reminds me of the the post where a guy's climbing stick strap broke. We trust our seat belts and usually our shoestrings, but straps and ropes deteriorate over time, especially if left to the elements between hunts. Very good tip, and I'm glad your ML was ok.
 
Also if you have some type of clip system at the end of your pull rope check it. I had one break after climbing a very tall and angled tree. I was wore out after having to climb it again.

We use green parachute cord and put it out of the sun in the off season. Since we regulary use cord around camp for various uses, we replace them regularly and use the old lift ropes for those other uses. We only started doing this after reading of Craig Harper's tree stand strap failure. We also replace the straps every couple years.

Good point Mike. Also, I like to wrap the cord thru a couple of times, then put the clip on the cord. I think that lessens the stress on the clips.
 
on my main climber I have been using this old cotton rope that I found... well heck I don't remember, I might have found it by the river when fishing or something.. it's pretty strong but sometimes I have to wonder if it needs replaced. My other climber has fresh paracord for the pull rope.

Sometimes I just climb with the weapon slung on my back

I tend to leave the ropes out there all season long, so I'd think after a couple of seasons they may need to be changed.

When I was able to climb I carried something with me that I could use to grab whatever I left on the ground to lift it up to my stand. No use looking for one because I invented it. :)
 
I have a 1/2" retractable strap that I use. Once i've pulled my weapon up, I place it in my backpack. Never leave it hanging. Lots of scent on the rope/strap.
 
I use a black and green rope. 2 years ago i bought a pair of light bow hunting scent lok Gloves on sell at bass pro. just a few dollars more then there other bow hunting gloves they had there. Only pieace of scent control clothing i own. I Always put on my gloves before pulling my rope up I did this before i got scent lok gloves because before i got my rope i had a thin retacrtable rope that hurt my hands unless i used gloves by using gloves should it keep most the scant off the rope.

Or you could just tie the end of it to your stand till you get ready to leave. ;)

True but i was not even thinking about while hunting . i was thinking about while your away from the stand. you will have a 15 or 20ft pieace of rope hanging from the top of your stand all the way down the tree like a giant human scent wafer blowing in the wind until you hunt that a spot again.

Honestly,
I've got a pull rope hanging from every ladder stand I have[5-6] and also have one dangling from my climber upon climbing.
Here is one recent result with rope dangling:
 
Never said you could not kill deer with it hanging there lol. im not a scent freak besides them gloves i got on sell at bass pro and my boots all my clothes have came from walmart or handed down to me lol. i never use scent kill spray i have a pull up rope hanging off my stand too i just don't touch it with my bare hands lol something i just do i guess. i pee outta the stand,dip outta the stand. as long as you spend time in the stands and your in a good spot your gonna get a shot at a deer. was they not like a 27pt buck killed in oak ridge a while back while the guy was walking outta the woods stopped to set on stump and started talking on the phone with his gun on the ground when he saw the deer lol
 
dang i been doing it all wrong. guess the deer where i hunt are dumb. i piss, spit, drop cracker crumbs, dropped a deuce (death from above) and always seem to kill one.
