Removing Open Sights...Help Please

I have a 1972 Model 700 Remington .308 with open sights and a scope...

I want to get a new scope and was wondering if the open sights can be moved to mount the scope lower to the gun....if so...how are they removed....

any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks
 
If it's the same as most Model 700s I've seen you will be able to see one of the two screws that holds the sight on. You'll need to loosen and remove the slide on the sight and then you'll be able to see another one under the slide body. Remove both and you're in business.
 
thats the thing...i have done that but they do not budge...are the stuck on somehow...or is it just from over time...1972 that is a long time to be on there..how can i losen them...?

Try soaking them with penetrating oil over a period of a few days and then try again. They're probably rusty or locktited. You never know what may be in a rifle's past. You may need to use an impact driver to loosen them. Worst comes to worst they can be drilled and turned out. If you're worried about damage you may want to take it to a gunsmith who's used to the problems with rusted screws. It goes with their territory.

I would lay a few squirts of Kano-Kroil on the screw-heads every couple hours for a few days with the rifle laying in a sights-up position. Then I would remove them. I would also contact Remington and get some replacement receiver plug screws. They are the screws in the receiver that are used in the holes where the scope bases go. When you do get the sights off the screw holes are easily plugged with the base-screw plugs. It might not bother you if the sight holes aren't plugged but it bothered me on my 700...just looked like an unfinished projest to me.
