Remington would be my choice these days. Brownings are a excellent choice also. My favorite deer rifle I've ever owned was a Browning Hunter Medallion chambered in 30-06. I sold it years ago for some odd reason. I have regret selling that rifle all the time. Kinda like looking back at an old girlfriend that you wished you would have hung on to.
I'd have to go with Remington (especially for the price) and have shot them since I was 8 years old. I have model 700s in .243, .270, and .300 win missle. All of them are real shooters. The .270 is an ADL and will shoot about .75 at 100 with factory ammo. And I'm not sure about the off the shelf thing... I'd put my 700 SS 5R up against a browning with one of those silly cans on the barrel. Call me biased :)
I think they are probably both great, and so it may depend on the individual gun you end up with. I have a browning, with one of those "silly cans". It is a 300wsm; I will blinfold you and give you some ear plugs, lol, and you will think you are shooting a well mannered 270. Also it is quite accurate, and worthy of a better shooter than myself.
Oh I know the boss works, and works well. A very good friend of mine has a .300 win mag with a ported boss, and it worked as advertised. Topped with a 18x Swarovski, it shoots well. It truly sounds like thunder though! Good Lord!
I like the old Mauser action Belgium Browning Safaris with the Stainless bolt and gold inlay scroll work on the trigger guard, and the floor-plate. I never have really liked the new A-bolt. I like the Midel 7 Remingtons a lot though. It's kind of a personal preference type thing. Get what YOU like.
Depends on the model. My Browning A Bolt Hunter .270 with BOSS (get the non-ported version) is easily the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. But I really would love to have a Remington Mountain Rifle, 260 REM, in Stainless and Nutmeg Laminate stock. I like the satin finish on the new MOdel Sevens, too.
