Remington ser #/ date

my grandson in law ,received an older rem 30-06 for Christmas.passed down from his father.
He is wondering how to read the manufacture date from the ser #. it starts with an A then numbers ... anyone ?

Remington uses a barrel date code that is stamped on the barrel just in front of the receiver, just above the wood line on the left side. It consists of 2-3 letters. Sometimes they aren't stamped heavily and may be canted a bit and can be problematic to read. There are also some inspection stamps in the same general area that can confuse matters. But there are references on the internet to decode the stamp. Just google Remington barrel date code. PH
