I have a older Remington 700 in 243 I have grown to really like the 7mm08. So what is the process to turn that gun into a 7mm08? Would it be worth the cost to turn that gun into a 7mm08 or just buy a new one? Trying to way my options.
 
My last 7-08, which my son has and won't bring it back,lol, is an early 1980's 700 action. It has a 26 in. Hart light target barrel, the bolt has been squared and lugs lapped. It has a Holland firing pin and spring and a Timney. trigger, bedded and floated in the factory stock. Now here is what is amazing. We have yet find a factory load that will not shoot sub moa. And 150 gr. Nosler BT pushed by H380 will go 1/4 in moa all day long. Was it worth it? Absolutely!
 
7mm08 and a 308 have the same bolt face so all you need to do is buy a new barrel (PacNor or any other) find a gunsmith to install it and you are in the berries. The cost of a new barrel and the installation should set you back around $450 depending on whose barrel you buy.
 
For the absolute cheapest route, finding a factory take-off barrel in 7-08 and having it swapped onto your action is the cheapest way to go, especially if you know someone that has a barrel vise and action wrench (and enough sense to use them). Headspace would need to be checked and adjusted if needed.

Or, just buy a barrel blank in the contour of your choice and send it off to have it installed on your action if that's the action you want to use.
 
look on ebay for a take off barrel
i've seen them for as little as 35 bucks and shipping runs usally around 15
and i've rarely had to pay over a 110 to have a barrel swapped

Better talk to a good gun smith it is more than just screwing a barrel off and one on. There will have to some head spacing done and maybe a few other things.
