I'm looking at one in 7mm-08 with a wood stock for myself to hunt with, but also a gun my wife could use and one day my kids. If it was solely for me I'd go with a 700, but I like the shorter barrel and overall length for the wife/kids. Plus, I'm looking for a "heirloom" rifle to pass down.

Is the thin barrel the main concern? Any other thoughts would be great.

I have a walnut/blued M7 6mm Rem bought new in `89 and a S/S M7 308 bought new in `97,, the 6mm has been shot a crap load and the 308 over 1,000 rounds the 6mm doesnt shoot as good as it did 28 years ago but will still shoot 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards and the 308 will still shoot as good as when it was new,,

just dont shoot long fast strings and overly heat the bbl and they will shoot really well and last a long time,


I killed my best whitetail stillhunting a ridgeline with the 308 and after rattling and a snort wheeze I had to shoot the big Ky 9 pointer in self defence at 30 yards ,,
 
Bought my son's Model 7 in 7mm-08 back in 1995 when he was one year old. I "broke it in" via deer hunting with it until he started using it in 2005.

Kills deer like the hammer of God (139 grain SP, factory-whatever). Never lost one and only one required a 2nd shot after being spine shot.

I like them so well I have three of them. .243, 260, and 7-08. The .243 and 7-08 are older rifles and have the 18" barrels. IMO they are the perfect tree stand rifle and are my go to rifles when I just want to go on a walk about.
They all shoot well with the proper ammo, but wouldn't be my first choice for a target rifle or for shots way out there. But my Grandson used his .243 Mdl. 7 on our Wyoming Pronghorn hunt where he dropped his goat with a 158 yd shot.
They are a bit finicky when sighting in because the small diameter barrels heat up so quickly and will start scattering shots all over the target. You just have to be patient and let the barrel cool between shots.

A Ruger American Compact comes pretty darn close. I bought one of those last year, killed 5 does and one 7 point, all DRT except for one spine shot doe.
 
A Winchester featherweight is another option as I have two of them, one of my favorite rifles for hunting woods.

Is it a full size gun? I'm looking for a compact gun my wife/kids can use but I️ don't want an actual youth rifle.

They are very similar to the model 7, length of pull and weight. 6 3/4 lbs

I have a Win M70 Classic Featherweight 270 WSM that is heavier than a Rem 700 BDL ,,the Win is a very nice rifle but is not in the same class as the M7 as a light rifle,
 
Both my Winchester M70 featherweights weigh 7.5 lbs. with scope... not sure what the newer 270 WSM weighs...

Great thread cause I mostly bow hunt tree stands but I like to carry a rifle occasionally. My Tikka is pretty light but I'm looking for a dedicated tree stand gun. The Model 7 in 7mm 08 with a high quality scope set on low power will fit the bill.

absolutely great stand, walking rifles, have owned 4, the predator 22" barrel is pretty accurate also!
